In 1959, Gyatso was imprisoned by the Chinese for thirty-three years after taking part in a non-violent demonstration for Tibetan freedom. The foreword is by the Dalai Lama.Laid in is a letter to Matthiessen from the Harvill Press, sending him the book and noting that Tsering Shakya, a great admirer of Mathiessen, very much wanted him to receive a copy.
