Red Cloth. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. gilt titles spine; illustrated by b/w. line drawings; a volume in the 'Essex Library' series; "few counties in England can claim more eccentrics than Essex. In the past its impenetrable forests, lonely marshlands and isolated villages were ideally suited to the flourishing of singularity and bred all sorts of odd characters. The people of Essex, always noted for their love of individualism, were proud of these characters and regarded even the most ridiculous with good-humoured tolerance. They appreciated the originality of their views and admired the spirited way in which they pursued their fantasies and flouted the conventions. Before the advent of pop-stars and television, of course, eccentrics were also highly prized as entertainers. Their outlandish clothes, hilarious exploits and racy quips added zest to dull rural existences and supplied wonderful material for gossip."; small stain on front cover, ink ref. "I sometimes wonder how on earth I ever survived the rough and tumble way I started my shooting career. It was obvious I did everything wrong from the start. The start began at the age of eight. .I used to spend all my time away from school working, or thinking I was, harrowing with the horse or trying to plough. .[A double-barrelled muzzle loader was produced] from a pile of junk in the shed next to the cow shed. .We took it to pieces and washed the barrels out with boiling water. Then we got it together and loaded it with a clay pipe of black powder, a wad of the Eastern Daily Press, a pipeful of shot and rammed the whole lot down with more paper .We then put on two caps, tied the gun to a tree and fired it by pulling the triggers with a long piece of string. .The stock, which was full of worm holes stood the test without shedding a sprinkle of sawdust and the gun was deemed safe." "Alan Savory's latest collection or reminiscences about shooting, fishing and natural history in general ranges from Norfolk to the West Country." Chapters include: Guns, rods and dogs; The magic of wildfowling; Broadland; Fishing; A mixed bag. .

BB, (illustrator). (Hardcover, 1979). (1976) 1979 reprint. 8vo (138 x 222mm). Ppviii,86. B/w illustrations by D.J. Watkins-Pitchford. Blue cloth, spine titled in gilt. Cloth slightly bumped, cup ring to lower board, internally clean. Lacks dust-wrapper. "'BB' describes wildfowling adventures after geese, chiefly on the Scottish coast. He brings to life the excitement of the sport, the tensions of a carefully planned stalk, the patience needed to wait for a flight in a freezing dawn or even by moonlight or a clear night, the careful planning of tactics needed for a successful drive. He has a keen sense for what goes 'in the cold dark hours of pre-dawn whilst other (perhaps more sensible but infinitely duller) mortals sleep', and his concentration on his sport does not prevent him from watching the landscape around him, whose beauties are caught both in his descriptions and in his seven full-page black and white illustrations." .
