Manuscript / Paper Collectible
Condition: Very good. On the doctor's stationary, typed, and signed in manuscript; also included is the original envelope; 5 1/2 x 8 1/2, text to recto only; two faint, vertical creases, else very minor wear; envelope with age-toning and spotting.A truly-bizarre letter, it was addressed to one E. F. Stewart, presumably an aide to the Governor, by Dr. Howard Cameron, Ocultist and Aurist (several period media advertisements and business directories alternately list Dr. Cameron as an eye-ear-nose-throat doctor). He informed Stewart he could possibly get the Governor admitted to the hospital at a reduced rate, as a previous eye surgery had not turned out quite up to the doctor's standards. Then, the letter took a weird turn, where the latter mentioned that on the previous visit, the Governor's clothes had been in bad shape, so Dr. Cameron had handed him a discarded suit of his own. Though research has not revealed much about this particular event in the Governor's life, it is a bit of a stretch to imagine the highly-successful and prominent Hiram Johnson (1866 - 1945) in tattered clothes and asking for a discount on a hospital visit.
