Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. Jacket by Dave Webster (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. This is not the greatest copy! Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, spine slightly faded, corners rubbed and bruised, flaps badly stretched, some damp cockling to bottom back jacket, some yellowing to page block, pronounced lean, not price clipped (£3.25), no inscriptions, internally clean and tight, overall a good reading copy only. 286pp. The sixth Ramage book. It is 1801 and the Royal Navy is trying to prevent Napoleon's invasion of Britain. Dudley Pope (1925-97), was an experienced Naval officer, journalist and historian who has delighted generations of readers with thrilling stories of high adventure at sea. Influenced by Forester, Pope is perhaps most loved for his Ramage series which follows the exploits of Lord Nicholas Ramage during the Napoleonic Wars, but he is also highly respected for his scholarly works. Quite a scarce book.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Revised Edition. First published in 1956, this is a second impression of the revised edition, published 1974. Ex library with usual stamps and defects. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, some faint scratches to spine, ffep cut away, not price clipped (£15.00), no personal inscriptions, internally clean tight and almost square, read carefully for a library book. 210pp, illustrated. The Battle of the River Plate was fought in the South Atlantic on 13th December 1939 as the first naval battle of the Second World War. The Kriegsmarine heavy cruiser Admiral Graf Spee, commanded by Captain Hans Langsdorff, engaged a Royal Navy squadron, commanded by Commodore Henry Harwood, comprising the light cruisers HMS Ajax, HMS Achilles (on loan to the New Zealand Division) and the heavy cruiser HMS Exeter. Graf Spee had sailed into the South Atlantic in August 1939, before the war began, and had begun commerce raiding after receiving the appropriate authorisation on 26th September 1939. Harwood's squadron was one of several search groups sent in pursuit by the British Admiralty and sighted Graf Spee off the estuary of the River Plate near the coasts of Argentina and Uruguay. In the ensuing battle, Exeter was severely damaged and forced to retire, making for the Falklands, Ajax and Achilles suffered moderate damage. Damage to Graf Spee, although not extensive, was critical because her fuel system was crippled. Ajax and Achilles shadowed the German ship until she entered the port of Montevideo, the capital of neutral Uruguay, to effect urgent repairs. Langsdorff was told that his stay could not be extended beyond 72 hours. Apparently believing that the British had gathered a superior force to await his departure, he ordered for the ship to be scuttled. Three days later, Langsdorff killed himself. Dudley Pope (1925-97), friend and protege of C. S. Forester, was an experienced Naval officer, journalist and historian who has delighted generations of readers with thrilling stories of high adventure at sea. Pope is perhaps most loved for his Ramage series which follows the exploits of Lord Nicholas Ramage during the Napoleonic Wars, but he is also highly respected for his scholarly works, of which this book is one. Quite scarce, even in this later impression.
