ADDITIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL AND HISTORICAL STUDIES FOR THE FAIRMOUNT HOTEL PROJECT IN SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS (Center for Archaeological Research, Survey Report No. 160), Joseph H. Labadie, softcover, illustrated, 1986. ITEM CONDITION: fine. The text block and illustrations are in fine condition, with no tears, dog ears, or marks. No bookplate nor name of a prior owner. Not a library book or remainder. The wraps are in fine condition. 11 x 8 ½, 28 pages, 5 ounces XX (From the introduction) During June 12-14, 1985, the Center for Archaeological Research (CAR), The University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) carried out an intensive archaeological testing program (designated the Fairmount Il Project) on New City Block (NCB) 155, Lot 6, in downtown San Antonio, Texas. The project was done under contract with the Fairmount Hotel Company in advance of their planned development on the southern half of Lot 6. The northern half of NCB 155, Lot 6, had been investigated previously by the CAR-UT SA (February 16-March 1, 1985). These investigations (designated as the Fairmount I Project) resulted in the identification and excavation of La Villita Earthworks site (41 BX 677). The proposed development on the southern portion of Lot 6 involves a two-level addition of three to four stories to the recently relocated historic Fairmount Hotel. The area is roughly equal to 80 x 90 feet. The development necessitated the removal of all earth in the southern half of Lot 6 to a depth roughly 10 feet below the present-day street level on South Alamo Street. The new development will reach to within several feet of the German-English School (established in 1858) located on Lot 5; this three-building complex has been designated as a Texas Historic Landmark. The purpose of this archaeological project was to evaluate the cultural resource significance of the southern portion of Lot 6, its potential for nomination to the National Register of Historic PIaces and as a State Archeological Landmark, and to determine if development would cause significant damage to subsurface deposits.

The 1974 survey recorded 81 sites (72 archeological, 2 historical, and 7 paleontological) in the watershed, 31 of which (30 archeological and 1 paleontological) are located in 15 of the reservoirs. The archeological sites are open occupational areas. Most are temporary camps, mainly late Archaic and late Neo-Indian, with a few early Neo-lndian. Some are late Neo-Indian permanent villages. The villages are located along the main valley. The flint in the watershed is largely from the Alibates quarries to the west. Little was learned about the Archaic and historic remains, but substantial information about the early and late Neo-lndian occupations was gained. The early Neolndian components contain elements of both Plains Woodland and Southwestern Mogollon traditions. The late Neo Indian components are in the Plains Village tradition, but differ from both the Panhandle Aspect to the west and the Custer-Washita River foci to the east. The historic materials may be Faraon Apache.

The wraps are in fine condition with fine two-staple binding. 11 x 8 ½, 39 pages, 6 ounces XX The Battle of Rosillo Creek took place in 1813 when Texas was still part of Mexico, which had begun its decade-long war of independence from Spain. [Wikipedia] The Battle of Rosillo Creek (also known as the Battle of Rosalis) was a conflict between the Republican Army of the North and Spanish Royalist forces which occurred on March 29, 1813 in Coahuila y Tejas. The battle took place during the Gutiérrez?Magee Expedition, a filibustering campaign which took place during the Mexican War of Independence. The battle involved the Republican Army of the North (RAN), which was led by filibusters Samuel Kemper (who had been involved in an 1804 rebellion in Florida), Augustus Magee, and Bernardo Gutiérrez de Lara, the expedition's leader, fighting against the Spanish Royalist forces commanded by Manuel María de Salcedo, Governor of the province of Texas, and Simón de Herrera, the governor of Nuevo León. The RAN comprised Anglo-Americans, Mexicans and Indigenous Indians. The group also had some help from the United States. In 1812 the RAN crossed over the Sabine River from Louisiana into Texas. Flying a green flag, they captured the town of Nacogdoches on August 7, 1812. They quickly marched to Goliad, where they captured the Presidio La Bahía. Kemper became a commander of the force upon the death of Colonel Magee there. From November 13, 1812, to February 19, 1813, Goliad was besieged when the Royalist army finally arrived to confront them. Unable to defeat the Republican Army, however, the Royalists were forced to retreat to San Antonio in March 1813. Kemper and the RAN, numbering about 900 men, pursued. The Royalist force, numbering 1,500 men, planned to ambush the RAN from a ridge which overlooked Rosillo Creek near its confluence with Salado Creek, approximately nine miles southeast of San Antonio de Bexar. Their trap failed when they were detected by the Republican forces, who defeated them in less than an hour. At a cost of six men, the Republican Army killed 100 to 330 Royalists and captured materiel including six cannon and 1,500 horses. The Royalists retreated to San Antonio where they surrendered to the Republican Army on April 1. Two days later Salcedo, Herrera, and 12 others were executed by the victors. On April 6 the Republican Army issued a draft declaration of independence. [Note: Texas would not be independent until 1836].

[From Wikipedia] Caprock Canyons State Park and Trailway is a Texas state park located along the eastern edge of the Llano Estacado in Briscoe County, Texas, United States, approximately 100 miles (160 km) southeast of Amarillo. The state park opened in 1982 and is 15,314 acres (6,197 ha) in size, making it the third-largest state park in Texas. The area contains badlands with mesquite, cacti and junipers with tall grasses, plums, hackberries and cottonwoods in the canyons. The Park hosts the Texas state bison herd. At the urging of his wife, Charles Goodnight preserved several plains bison from those that were being slaughtered. This herd became one of the genetic sources from which current bison herds descend. The state herd only contains plains bison which have no cattle DNA. African aouodad sheep (Barbary sheep), mule deer, white-tailed deer, coyotes, opossums, raccoons, bobcats, foxes, porcupines, numerous species of snakes and lizards, and over 175 species of birds including golden eagles are found within the park. Lake Theo contains bass, catfish, and rainbow trout. In the summer of 2012 black-tailed prairie dogs were reintroduced to a 200-acre (81 ha) area within the park.

This is not a library book nor a remainder. Tight 2-staple binding. The gray wraps are in very good condition (a few minor creases on back cover). 11 x 8 ½, 41 pages, 7 ounces XX This guide to the town and missions at Guerrero, Coahuila, is based largely upon the research efforts of the Gateway Project, an archaeological and ethnohistoric study of the area conducted by the Center For Archaeological Research, the University of Texas at San Antonio during 1975 to 1977. Because the project was dealing with historic mission buildings which housed Native American inhabitants of the region, the project had both historic and prehistoric aspects. The Indians gathered into the missions were inheritors of the native cultural tradition begun at least 11,000 years ago. Therefore, an archaeological survey of prehistoric sites in the region of the missions, on both sides of the Rio Grande, were included in the study. The excavations carried out at the missions located the buried remains of historic buildings which had been lost and forgotten for nearly a century. In addition, the sifting of the soils removed from the building remains provided both Spanish and Indian artifacts which were related to mission activities. Ethno-historic research focused on old Spanish documents which provided valuable additional information about the missionizing program at Guerrero, and also aided to illuminate the archaeological findings.
