Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Pull My Daisy is a 1959 short film that typifies the Beat Generation. Directed by Robert Frank and Alfred Leslie, Daisy was adapted by Jack Kerouac from the third act of a stage play he never finished titled Beat Generation. Kerouac also provided improvised narration. It starred Allen Ginsberg, Gregory Corso, Larry Rivers, Peter Orlovsky, David Amram, Richard Bellamy, Alice Neel, Sally Gross and Pablo Frank, Robert Frank's then-infant son. Based on an incident in the life of Neal Cassady and his wife Carolyn, Daisy tells the story of a railway brakeman whose painter wife invites a respectable bishop over for dinner. However, the brakeman's bohemian friends crash the party, with comic results. The title Pull My Daisy was taken from the poem of the same name written by Kerouac, Ginsberg and Neal Cassidy over the 1940s and 1950s. The poem features in the film as the lyric within the jazz composition at the film's opening. The Beat philosophy emphasized spontaneity, and the film conveyed the quality of having been thrown together or even improvised. Pull My Daisy was accordingly praised for years as an improvisational masterpiece, until Leslie revealed in a 1968 article in the Village Voice that the film was actually carefully planned, rehearsed, and directed by him and Frank, who shot the film on a professionally lit studio set. This book interweaves a transcript of Kerouac's narration from the film with film stills and also includes an introduction by Jerry Tallmer written in 1961. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This is the newest book in Juergen Teller's original and beloved "Masters" series. Teller made his first Master in 2005 as an homage to anything and everything he believes is a master or masterful-be it punk rock icon Iggy Pop, actor Gillian Anderson, football manager Carlo Ancelotti, or even a simple vase of flowers - as well as a tongue-in-cheek recognition of himself as the master of his photographic identity. The concept was simple: to create an ongoing collection of humble books, each at the same small size, with no text and as little design as possible - an antithesis to the standard overblown coffee-table book.Like past volumes in the series, The Master V presents an unpredictable mix of Teller's eclectic photography: be it his unorthodox fashion work, still lifes, landscapes, portraits, or images that move between these genres. Featuring subjects including chess grand master Garry Kasparov, editor-in-chief of British Vogue Edward Enninful and fashion designer Demna Gvasalia, The Master V reveals some of the fascinating personalities most inspiring to Teller at this moment.I don't like taking a sly picture on the side. I like the direct approach. I want to be as honest to myself and the subject as possible. And I'm depending on their humanness to come through. - Juergen Teller Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This "history" came about because my friends, Sarah Dudley and Ulie Kuhle, litho printers in Berlin, were given about 100 litho stones from a former Socialist art academy in what was the D.D.R. The stones all had images on them drawn by forty years of students under the oppressive regime. I asked them to reactivate the stones and print them on Zerkall Paper 450 g/m^2. Most images I chose of the 100 were able to have life breathed into them. We had finally forty-five images. They editioned the lithographs and then sent them to us in Walla Walla, Washington. I drew and ground and bit copper plates to go over them. I wanted a black view of the image and a sense of Berlin in the East as I knew it when the horrible wall was still up. The etchers who came to work with me every summer over two and a half years have coaxed the exact mood I wanted out of the plates. A history that came about because the author's friends, Sarah Dudley and Ulie Kuhle, litho printers in Berlin, were given about 100 litho stones from a former Socialist art academy in what was the D D R. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. "I never really think of anyone as models, even the models," Juergen Teller has said, and "Everything I choose to photograph, I think is beautiful." It was with these liberating beliefs in mind that Teller approached his photographs for the 2021 Best Performances issue of W magazine. Notes About My Work is Teller's tongue-in-cheek response to the feedback he received on this controversial portfolio.Best Performances is an annual issue of W, showcasing cinema's stars of the moment as chosen by the magazine's larger-than-life editor-at-large Lynn Hirschberg. In Los Angeles Teller photographed 28 actors in total, the established and the emerging, from Michelle Pfeiffer and George Clooney to Steven Yeun and Otmara Marrero, all posing with (and sometimes even on top of) cars-a quintessential feature of the city he wanted to celebrate. W was delighted with the result-celebrities looking fabulously normal, fashion championed as a way to enjoy life-yet online reactions were mixed. Teller was praised as "a perfect choice" for his "aversion to excess glamour," but also subject to criticism, much misinterpreting his tone and working methods. This book presents Teller's selection of screenshots of some of these "notes about his work"-a mirror onto social media and a playful reminder that beauty is whatever we choose it to be.When critics disagree, the artist is in accord with himself. - Oscar Wilde Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Writing from New York in March 1949, Robert Frank sent home to his mother in Switzerland a birthday gift of a book maquette of a series of photographs he had made during a visit to Peru. Frank made an identical book for himself and one of each of these two dummies now resides in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and National Gallery of Art, Washington. A few of these images are well-known in Frank's oeuvre but previously the entire series had only ever been seen by a small number of people. This book presents for the first time the complete sequence of images, based on the original book Frank had conceived and realised under his direction. Peru is a work of major historical significance in both the artist's history and the history of photography. Book
Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. When he went to Algeria in the 1950s Dirk Alvermann was only eighteen, a rebellious West German teenager thrilled by the struggle for freedom by the Algerian people against French colonial rule. Together with a unit of the Algerian liberation army, he found a way to cross the hermetically sealed border from Tunisia into the Eastern Algerian war zone, determined to keep a photographic record of the events unfolding there. After his return to West Germany he set about planning the publication of his work in the most accessible form available. The book should go from hand to hand like a political manifesto. In 1950 German publishing house Rowohlt had introduced its pocket book series, known by the name rororo - an ideal format for the book Alvermann intended to produce. At first, Rowohlt agreed to publish the book but later canceled it when any partisanship with the Algerian resistance seemed inappropriate. The book was finally published by the East-Berlin publishing house Ru tten & Loening in 1960 as a hardcover, contrary to Alvermann's vision for the project. Steidl's new edition of this important and classic book gives voice to the artist's original intentions, adopting the rororo format and softcover finish. The photographs are accompanied by historical documents, quotes taken from French military sources, and from pamphlets, newspapers and magazines. More than fifty years after its first publication, the book is as relevant as ever as it tells the story of a people rising up against oppression and despotism: against European colonialism or, like today, against homemade dictatorial regimes. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Juergen Teller's new book features black-and-white stills from a video that recorded him while he watched last year's World Cup Final between Germany and Brazil, live. Describing it as "the most disturbing thing I have ever seen" and shocked by the pure animal instincts it reveals, Teller offers us extraordinarily cruel yet mesmerizing self-portraits of himself shouting and swearing during the TV match commentary. Also included are other self-portraits, together with shots of football celebrities and images of Teller's family, among them one of his mother at his father's grave. Teller explores his subjects with equal intelligence and wit, be they celebrities, family, or friends, in striking and provocative ways. Nackig auf dem Fussballplatz--Naked On the Soccer Field, for those of you who couldn't guess--is an extension of his previous work with portraiture and self-portraiture. In it he uses football as a vehicle to explore aspects of his personal life, and in particular to reflect on his relationship with his family. Juergen Teller's new book features black and white stills from a video film showing him while he watches the 2002 World Cup Final between Germany and Brazil, live. Included are also other self-portraits, together with shots of football celebrities and images of Teller's family, among them one of his mother at his father's grave. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Your life is a rare form of transparency through which I have observed the world becoming more present to itself and through which I have become more present to myself. Roni Horn, An Uncountable Infinity (for Felix Gonzalez-Torres), 1996In 1990 Felix Gonzalez-Torres encountered an artwork by Roni Horn called Gold Field (1980/82), a simple sheet of gold foil placed on the floor of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art. Gonzalez-Torres was deeply moved and wrote to Horn, beginning an exchange between the artists that would last until Gonzalez-Torres' passing in 1996. Felix Gonzalez-Torres Roni Horn was created as a photographic essay with the intention of sharing the experiential qualities of the artists' work and the profound relationships underlying it. It explores four iconic works (among others)-"Untitled" (For Stockholm) (1992) and "Untitled" (Blood) (1992) by Gonzalez-Torres, and Well and Truly (2009-10) and a.k.a. (2008-09) by Horn-and emphasizes notions of doubling, duality, repetition, and identity. Images of these pieces, taken on the occasion of a 2022 exhibition at the Bourse de Commerce-Pinault Collection in Paris, reveal both artists' radical visual vocabularies, as well their shared passion for language, writing and poetry. Their intention emerges as two-fold: to create a tension between artist, viewer and object; and to grasp the inexpressible, the immeasurable. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. We made a trip to the Hill of Crosses, and I couldnt stop photographing it! - Juergen Teller The infamous Hill of Crosses is a pilgrimage and tourist site near Siauliai, Lithuania, which originated after the November Uprising of 183031, an extensive yet unsuccessful attempt to overthrow Russian rule. Crosses is Juergen Tellers intimate response to this place of remembrance, which he visited with his Lithuanian wife Dovile Drizyte and her parents in autumn 2022. With his ever curious, surveying eye, Teller captures the intense spirituality of this sacred destination. Responding to over 100,000 crucifixes within just one acre, his images embody this tangled web of religious iconography, including a dense multitude of crosses, stone sculptures of Jesus Christ draped in rosary beads, and large wooden carvings. Teller singles out details of small effigies of Christ and other emblematic features, deftly framing them against the landscape in an act of candid self-reflection. The series takes on an even deeper personal significance in the context of the 2022 passing of fashion designer Vivienne Westwood, with whom Teller had collaborated since 2007, and his gallerist since 2013 Suzanne Tarasieve. He embeds portraits of these powerful yet vulnerable women into his collection of symbolic images, a compelling tribute to two personalities who continue to inspire his work. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. In this, Robert Frank's newest book, he both acknowledges and moves beyond his acclaimed visual diaries (2010-17), which juxtapose iconic photos from throughout his career with the more personal pictures he makes today and suggestive, often autobiographical text fragments. In Good Days Quiet Frank's focus is life inside and outside his beloved weather-beaten wooden house in Mabou, where he has spent summers for decades with his wife June Leaf. Among portraits of Leaf, Allen Ginsberg and Frank's son, are images of the house's simple interior with its wood-fuelled iron stove, humble furniture and bare light bulbs, as well as views of the land and sea by the house: snow-covered, windswept, stormy or lit by the dying sun.Frank's Polaroids scanned for the book show various deliberate states of deterioration and manipulation at his hands, including texts that move from the merely descriptive ("watching the crows") to the emotive ("memories," "grey sea-old house / can you hear the music"). As always in Frank's books, his message lies primarily in the photos' lyrical sequence, an influential approach to the photobook pioneered by and today well at home in his 93-year-old hands.Time and tide wait for no man. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Is it a book, an exhibition, a catalogue of the exhibition? Is it mass produced? Is it unique? Dayanita Singh is a book artist who stretches the imagination of what a book can be, transcending the spaces between publishing and art. Book Building traces the journeys of Singh's books, from the first, Zakir Hussain (1986), to her latest, Zakir Hussain Maquette (2019), showing the spectrum of her book-building process, from idea to material object and how she inventively circulates them in the art world and beyond. Both a short history and a deep dive, this is Dayanita Singh's manifesto for the photobook. Taking those she has made with Steidl as a basis, we witness the transformation of books into book-objects which open up new interpretative spaces: Museum of Chance (2014), for example, first became a book-object, then a diptych, a book-case, a suitcase museum and a book museum, before finally becoming the ongoing museum in Singh's Museum Bhavan (2017). Book Building documents Singh's 13 books in images and short texts, along with several DIYs Singh has created with detailed instructions on how to display her books as exhibitions-making us the curators-as well as various performative interventions, from book carts and happenings, to installations and tours. At the heart of Book Building is the collaborative process that Dayanita Singh and Gerhard Steidl have established over 20 years; the belief that a book is always in a process of becoming. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Photography provides us with indispensable reserves of ore for our memories, which can be smelted and cast again. - Ai WeiweiRobert Frank carefully entwined his life and work, yet the man behind the camera always remained enigmatic. Goin' Down the Road with Robert Frank is a rare insider's look at Frank's world by his longtime friend and assistant (both in and out of the darkroom) Brian Graham. Graham's photos, made between 1979 and 2019, take us behind the scenes of Frank at work-on location for his 1987 film Candy Mountain, photographing Allen Ginsberg, inspecting contact sheets-and into his private life: laughing with his wife June Leaf, exploring a thrift shop, even fixing the roof of his Bleecker Street studio. Candid and spontaneous, Graham's images are often arranged in filmic sequences that create a sense of events unfolding in real time. Framed by nostalgic notes (by Graham as well as novelist and screenwriter Rudy Wurlitzer) and an introduction by Ai Weiwei (another of Graham's friends from the Lower East Side in the 1980s and '90s), these images form an intimate and original portrait of Robert Frank, a central figure both in Graham's photography and the history of the medium.
