Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. John Esam was born in 1934 in Wellington. His youthful escapades left a few legends among the poetry/arts community in the late 1950s and early '60s in Wellington, then he quit New Zealand for the UK and Europe. In 1965 he organised and read at an epochal poetry event at Albert Hall, London - attended by 7000 people - featuring Allen Ginsberg and a constellation of similar talent. John was also controversially involved with musicians such as Pink Floyd and counterculture icons such as Timothy Leary. He has lived overseas and kept a low profile ever since, but has never stopped writing excellent poetry. This is his life's work. John Esam was born in 1934 in Wellington. "What a fine thing it is to have this full and final show of Barry's wrerterly productivity laid out expansively, matched by a photo-essay that shows Barry doing what he always did most: working, in his own self-made situ. Laid out, too, in the long thin lines he loved to trace, on paper/ canvas, in clay, in the landscape. Curling across the page in those transitional curves that were in fact his strongest formal signature; and the thing that sent the radius of his work out, in the end, to some kind of infinity." - David Craig.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Niihau basks like a whaleor in some lights, like a jewelacross the sea from Kauai. Fewer than a hundred Niihauans now live there, but it is the spiritual home to many more elsewhere in Hawaii. Long known as the "Forbidden Island," it is seldom visited by outsiders. In this fully illustrated, wide-ranging study, Steven Gentry explores: The natural world of Niihau, and how its plants and animals have evolved and adapted to Polynesian and European arrivals Origins of Niihaus inhabitants, their journey to the Hawaiian islands; Niihauan creation myths and voyaging traditions, and the development of a distinctive culture The mixed blessings of European arrival in the Hawaiian islands, 1778 Niihaus complex relationship with Kauai Purchase of Niihau from King Kamehameha by the Sinclair family Early missionaries and ranching Aubrey Robinsons leadership and family, 1880s to the 1920s Aylmer Robinsons stewardship of the island State and private ownership, and preservation of the Niihauan language Dramatic and intriguing stories of island life, past and presentThe volcanic island of Niihau arose steaming and hissing from the ocean millions of years ago, but by the time the goddess Peles canoe landed on a golden Niihauan beach its fires were no more. In time Niihau and the other Hawaiian islands were settled by Polynesian people. Then came missionaries and, after them, ranchers. In 1864 Niihau was sold by the king of Hawaii to the Sinclair family, whose descendants still own it today. Steven Gentry traces all this history and weaves it into an intimate and engrossing account of this intriguing island. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. "These poems make a marvellous read: singly, a few at a time, or in one read-through. Of all the writers on things Wagnerian, poets have tended the most towards flowery, reverent adulation. But not John Davidson. His poems - impressions and soliloquies as much as poems - are honest, witty, and very contemporary. Yet all through the collection, a leitmotif of hommage can be heard. In the end, Wagner (and the poet) stand revealed through a uniquely satisfying music of words." ~ Heath Lees "Richard Wagner referred to himself repeatedly as a poet rather than as a composer and would surely have been delighted to find himself the subject of a volume of poetry. John Davidson's poems evince a deep love and knowledge of Wagner and his works: avoiding both hagiography and sentimentality, he makes us think about the subject in new ways - the mark of a true poet. This volume will doubtless appeal to committed Wagnerians but deserves to find an audience beyond them too." ~ Barry Millington "These poems make a marvellous read: singly, a few at a time, or in one read-through. Yet all through the collection, a leitmotif of hommage can be heard. In the end, Wagner (and the poet) stand revealed through a uniquely satisfying music of words." ~ Heath Lees Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.

Werner Seelenbinder's mission is an unknown story; the defiance and courage of the only Olympian in the resistance, subsequently concealed by the Americans in the Cold War and blotted out in modern postwar Germany. All the characters in Seelenbinder are real; all the main events described did happen. But amid the preparations for the coup and its nightmarish end, there unfolds a riddle of fact versus fiction. An Olympic athlete has been enlisted to expose Hitler and his war aims. Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. When the Reverend Samuel Marsden, under the mantle of the chief Ruatara, sent his missionaries to the far north of New Zealand they were often unprepared for the hardships that followed. Their wives frequently bore the greater burden as they were left alone, bearing children, teaching, nursing, gardening and building a home in harsh conditions while their husbands travelled. Ken Nobbs (1909-1996), himself a former missionary to the Sudan before retiring and turning his hand to writing, horticulture and breeding roses, was inspired by their stories: 'I am offering a number of new rambler roses .Instead of identifying them by numbers I have distinguished them by names, taking the opportunity to honour the memory of pioneer women who might otherwise be forgotten.' This book is a double celebration -- of the early missionaries, settlers and their wives, and of New Zealander Ken Nobbs who honoured them in his roses. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Nearly 90 years after being hidden, a diary and leather-bound photo album have re-emerged. They belonged to a spirited young man named Lance Rosser who died in Christchurch in 1928, aged just 24. In 1923 Lance was working as a grocer in Sockburn. For the sake of his health he left smoggy Christchurch for the cleaner air of Auckland, a trip that was considered almost the equivalent of today's 'Great OE'. The diary chronicles his wide-eyed journey north and what he found when he got to Auckland and began shaping a life. Auckland in the 1920s was going through a period of immense growth, and Lance's impressions of the Queen City during the Jazz Age are fascinating. He visits the newly opened zoo, details the arrival of the HMS Hood, goes to Town Hall performances and takes ferry trips to North Shore beaches (long before the harbour bridge existed). He also gives an interesting account of a trip to Rotorua and tells how a charismatic Scottish evangelist changed his life. Lance's diary and photographs give a clear and unique insight into the brief but full life of a headstrong man with dreams in 1920s New Zealand. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The idea of evolution is the most life-changing concept to have emerged in modern times, but most people know of it only in fragments. The evolution of the universe, of planet Earth, of life and of human culture is a truly breathtaking story that can be told in many ways. In one continuous story this book combines cosmological and biological evolution with the subsequent development of human thought made possible by the emergence of language. Lloyd Geering shows that the commonly supposed conflict between religion and science arises from a failure to appreciate the role of what he calls the 'human thought world'. The realm of the gods, created by human imagination, was the ancients' way of understanding nature. For them it was both their science and their religion. By sketching the history of 'God', Lloyd shows that the centrality of this idea provided an essential premise for the emergence of empirical science. This has enabled the human species to dominate planet Earth and usurp roles once attributed to God. The story of evolution helps us understand the past -- but the future of the human race now rests on our shoulders.
