Paperback. Condition: Very Good. A copy that has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. Candid snapshots in prose of literary and other figures-ranging from Aldous Huxley and Isaac Bashevis Singer to Faye Dunaway and Hunter S. Thompson-wh om the author encountered during four decades as a working writer and journ alist. In the course of the same old race I find myself writing about knowing some people-how fame seems to set some people apart from us, once known: I was astonished by Ernest Hemingway's small, weak handshake when we were introdu ced at Scribners by John Hall Wheelock and by the jolt of force with which Elie Wiesel squeezed my hand. How long ago seems knowing, too: when I first meet Isaac Singer he asks me, "Who is Mr. Saul Bellow?" We're on the Upper West Side in his apartment next to the funeral parlor. A yellow parakeet hops around on Singer's bald forehead. Singer's great comi c story of faith, "Gimpel the Fool," has only recently been published from Yiddish into English in a translation by Saul Bellow. They're both still a long way from Stockholm. "Do you know him? Can you tell me who this Mr. Bellow is?" he asks. It was not always possible to guess Singer's motives in acting as though he was no t impressed with worldly reputations. His features of a medieval Polish sai nt, even to a faint white-haired tonsure effect around the crown of his sku ll, were backlit by the glowing monitor from his mischievous incubus.-from the Preface These are Richard Elman's candid snapshots in prose of the various, mostly literary celebrities he encountered during his f.

Provides a lively description of how the cult of a popular plague-fighting deity named Marshal Wen arose and spread in late imperial China. One of the few full-length regional studies of popular religion in late imp erial China, this book presents the history of the cult of Marshal Wen, a p lague-fighting deity whose cult flourished through Chekiang and its neighbo ring provinces. The author provides a lively account of the rise of Wen's c ult during the tumultuous years of the Southern Sung dynasty, as well as it s spread during subsequent dynasties. In exploring the roles played by scho lar-officials, merchants, and Taoist priests in the growth of Wen's cult, t he author pays special attention to the various representations of this dei ty held by different social groups, and shows that these were constantly in teracting in a process he calls "reverberation." His analysis of plague exp ulsion festivals featuring Marshal Wen reveals that they functioned as rite s of affliction designed to both achieve communal purification and resolve social crises. This book draws on a wide variety of sources, including Taoist scriptures and liturgical texts, stele inscriptions, literati writings (including poetry), manuscripts from local archives, as well as popular novels and folktales. The author also supplements his historical research with data gathered during fieldwork in Chekiang and Taiwan.
