Athol Thomas worked for West Australian Newspaper Limited for thirty years, mainly as a columist and featured writer. For ten year he was travel editor of its major publication. The western Australian. Born in Beverly, he served in the World war Studies at University of Western Australian, went to advertising and then joined WA Newspaper Ltd 1951. In 1956 he won the Inaugural Walkley National Award for feature writing. In 1962 he wrote a series of stories on the Commonwealth Games in Perth and was asked by then editor of The Western Australian : Mr Griff Richards to write regular column. The column, called Her And Now, began early in 1963. He was the longest running column in the history of the newspaper and enabled Mr Thomas to develop his talents as a humour. He lives in Mosman Park, where he keep chickens, grows plants and indulges himself in outdoor cookery.
