Mesozoic benthonic mollusks, and especially bivalves, have a great potential for palaeobiogeographical analysis due to their commonly good preservation, abundance, diversity and high dispersion potential at the larval stage. The birth process falls far short of being com pleted. There appear new problems and methods of their solution in the framework of adaptive nonlinear dynamics. As early as 1889 DE VRIES had shown that various plant 'monstrosities' are inherited. His breeding experi ments with other plants involved the rediscovery of MENDEL'S laws and the resuscitation of MENDEL'S breeding methods, which had been in abeyance in the long period from 1865 to 1900. MENDEL began his crossing experiments in 1854, DE VRIES began his Oeno thera cultures in 1886. The genus Oenothera was thus the first after Pisum to be the subject of extensive genetic experiments. Thus was introduced the method now so widely pursued. It may be remembered also that DE VRIES drew the distinction between fluctuations and mutations, but he regarded all fluctuations or continuous variations as non-heritable. Both can be equated with the continuous and discontinuous variations of BATESON. DE VRIES' conception of mutations corresponds with the 'single variations' of DARWIN, except that he regarded each mutation as producing a new elementary species, now generally called microspe cies. He said in the introduction to his Mutationstheorie, that the characters of organisms are built up from units which are as sharply distinguished from each other as the molecules of chemistry. In such an endocytic process, cell surface receptors specifically bind protein ligands and localize them to specialized invaginations of the plasma membrane. These regions are coated pits, so named because they are lined on the cytoplasmic face with an ordered array of the protein, clathrin. It is this 'coat' which provides their characteristic electron microscopic image. Subsequently, these regions pinch off to form coated vesicles which rapidly lose their 'coat' and then fuse with other organelles or the plasma membrane. The hallmarks of ,this process are the specific receptors, coated pits, coated vesicles and an ordered sequence of transit events leading to delivery to selected locations. Receptor recognition, specific disposition of the endocytosed ligand and the existence of recep tor-ligand complexes at highest density in coated pits define the process as selective and concentrative. This topic has received ever increasing attention during the past few years. The evolving mechanisms are especially exciting because they come at a time when the conventional views based on thermodynamic arguments suggest that proteins should not be able to cross into the cell. Receptor-mediated endocytosis, however, reconciles the view that biological membranes should be impervious to macromolecules with the evidence that certain mac romolecules do gain entrance into the cell. On this premise the dustbowl period of the 1930s was selected as an analogue of climate change and its weather records imposed on the Missouri--Iowa--Kansas region to assess how current agriculture, forestry, water resources and energy and the entire regional economy would be affected. The same climate was also imposed on a MINK region forty years into the future, by which time climate change may actually be felt, to assess whether technological and societal change would alter the region's vulnerability to climate change. Another premise of the study was that people would not suffer the impacts of climate change passively, but would use availabe tools to ease the stress. The rising atmospheric concentration of carbon dioxide, expected to be the major cause of greenhouse warming, also works to improve plant growth and reduce plant water use. So the effects of this `Co2 fertilization' were also considered in the analysis.
