In der Regel wurden sie im Zusammenhang mit Stoffwechselerkran kungen besprochen und fanden daher das Interesse nur weniger Spezialisten. Uber den Stoffwechsel im StreB oder in der postoperativen Phase und tiber die hieraus sich ergebenden Erniihrungsprobleme dagegen war kaum etwas bekannt. Vor 15 lahren etwa befaBten sich nur einige wenige, kleine Arbeitsgruppen in der Welt mit Fragen der parenteralen und der ktinstlichen Erniihrung. Anfangs nahm die Klinik von diesen Arbeiten kaum Kenntnis. Dies iinderte sich jedoch sehr rasch, als die Klinik lernte, aus den Ergebnissen dieser Arbeiten in immer gr6Berem Umfang Nutzen zu ziehen. Heute hat die ktinstliche Erniihrung ebenso wie die parenterale Erniihrung ihren festen Platz in der Medizin. Ftir die tiigliche Arbeit am Krankenbett sind die modernen Erniihrungsformen oft genug ein entscheidender Bestandteil der Therapie. Unstreitig sind manche groBe Eingriffe der modernen Chirurgie ohne eine exakt bilanzierte Erniihrung - gleichgtiltig, ob auf oralem oder parenteralem Wege, ob halb- oder voIlsynthetisch - nicht erfolgreich durchfUhrbar. Up to that date, numerous studies had been published on the functional analysis of the human placenta. One shortcom ing common to all these studies, however, was the fact, that the human placenta was not absolutely suitable for morphological research, owing to fIxation difficulties, and for experimental investigations virtually unsuitable. Since other hemochorial villous placentae, like that of the anthropoid apes (primates) were practically unobtainable, a possible alternative was sought among the I;tcunal placentae. The numerous studies on the guinea-pig placenta undertaken at the turn of the century favoured the choice of this organ as it also belonged to the discoidal hemochorial type, like that of man. The fact that its structure was not villous but lacunal and therefore showed a different cir culation seemed even advantageous in this case. The lacunal system facilitates differen tiation in morphologically distinct areas, which allow independent functional analysis. The morphological and histochemical studies made during the past decade by Enders (1965), Vollrath (1965), Miiller and Fischer (1968), Kaufmann (1969a), Davidoff and Schiebler (1970a, b), King and Enders (1970b, 1971), Davidoff and Gospodinoff (1971), Davidoff (1973), Kaufmann (1974) have led to the discovery of a large amount of new information on this organ, thus rendering it one of the most precisely examined placentae so far. 100 pp. Englisch.

The book is not intended, however, to arouse public concern. It has been known for some time that each therapeutic measure has a risk-benefit ratio, the estimation of which requires an understanding of carcinogenic side-effects. The number of iatrogenic tumors published so far is not large; however, we assume that there are a number of cases that have not been registered. In the past it was not generally recognized that medical treatment might involve carcinogenic risks; moreover, various therapeutic measures are often used simultaneously so that it may be difficult to trace the cause of tumor formation to a specific agent. Animal experiments and clinical observations during the past few years have contributed to our knowledge of the possible hazards of drugs. We have compiled the most important literature on the subject without, however, attempting completion. The present book may help the pharmacotherapist balance the benefit of a drug against its potential risk, and is thus consistent with the medical principle of nil nocere. We thank Mrs. M. Almost all the students were either undergraduates in mathematics or graduate students in the biological sciences. The only prerequisites were calculus and matrices. As is done in these notes, biological background and additional mathematical techniques were covered when they were required. I have included the relevant problems assigned in the course. My aim in these notes is to formulate the various models fairly generally, making the biological assumptions quite explicit, and to perform the analyses relatively rigorously. I hope the choice and treatment of topics will enable the reader to understand and evaluate detailed analyses of specific models and applications in the literature. No attempt has been made to review the literature or to assign credit. Most of the references are to papers directly germane to the subjects and approaches covered here. While leukemias are already being 'phenotyped' routinely in clinical centers, continued research on the developmental sta ge of cells and cell membranes, expanding into a malignant clone, permits new snap shots on hemopoietic differentiation. Thus the discovery of leukemia-associated anti gens, which so far have not been found on subpopulations of normal cells, has greatly stimulated the discussion on 'differentiation antigens versus tumor antigens'. The proceedings reflect the considerable success which has been achieved very re cently in the classification of hemoblastomas. Consequently the number of leukemias which are unclassifiable by immunological methods have dwindled down to a small mi nority. New facts give rise to new questions. By including the main points of the discussions in the proceedings, we wanted to give the reader an opportunity to get an impression of the questions and conclusions raised and drawn by the participants on the basis of new - and frequently still unpublished - data.
