First Edition
Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm, xv, 233 pp, ills. From the blurb - "In September 1848 seven art students, the oldest of whom was 23, resolved to challenge the ultra-conservative art establishment of England. They formed a secret organisation which they called the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In less than two years the secret was out and these young artists had become notorious, controversial and more hysterically denounced than any other group of artists in the history of England. The dispute centred upon them involved practically every artist and art critic in the nation, and drew in such prominent non-artists as Charles Dickens and the Prince Consort. Their movement was saved only by a magisterial and level-headed defence by Ruskin. In this first full-length study of the Pre- Raphaelite Brotherhood Professor Fleming combines impressive scholarship with readability. Relying heavily upon contemporary sources, the author paints a vivid and dramatic picture of the principal figures in the movement - John Everett Millais, Holman Hunt and, dominating the scene, one of the most fascinating personalities of the nineteenth century - Dante Gabriel Rossetti." Browning to prelims, otherwise Good in chipped and slightly yellowed dustwrapper.
