Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. 312 pages. A sequel to Volume One. In this volume we cover the small companies, the agents and the retailers that were such an important part of the gunpowder trade. Oriental and Hercules are, or were, major firms but most of this book is devoted to the names that are all but unknown, except to a few advanced collectors. Again the majority of examples shown are from the Bacyk collection but another major source has been found in the Hagley Museum and Library. Hagley is connected with DuPont and many extremely rare cans, kegs and labels are from them. Samples from a few individual collectors are also included. Hundreds of sharp, detailed color photographs. Included is a rarity guide and an approximate value for each sample is pictured (as of the date of this publication). An excellent reference. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 265 pages. Westley Richards was the leader in British breechloading single shot development. Their early designs predated both the paper cartridge and coil case forms of the 1850-1860 period. The book describes Westley Richards designs in great detail during this important early breechloading period and shows how they were to influence subsequent firearms development. These designs evolved into the various hinged block similar to the Martini and falling block actions with which we are familiar. The Model of 1881 sidelever falling block and the underlever Model of 1887, a development from the 1881, were particularly important to the big game hunter. Much attention is given to the text, and hundreds of photos and drawings of the rifles, sights, reloading tools and cartridges for all models are contained in the book. The book also illustrates the whole range of single shot production to cover rook, sporting, military breechloaders and match rifles from the Monkey Tail to the .600 Nitros Westley Richards produced. Further the book chronicles the supply of Westley Richards military rifles to the Boer Republics. Westley Richards developments in black powder and nitro cartridges are also given extensive coverage with detailed information on their history, original loads, acceptance in the market and modern reloading information. He was the first prominent British maker to promote the falling block and was also the most successful. Henry's craftsmanship was unsurpassed and the many surviving examples, which we will illustrate, attest to this. He was a true experimenter and his developmental work in rifling and cartridge design was very significant. Henry also explored the development, somewhat unsuccessfully, of hammerless action designs which will be covered in detail in this book. The book also covers loading techniques and common problems encountered. An excellent reference. A very limited reprint of a book that has been long out of print and very scarce. Jeffery and the Trade Farquharsons. He chronicles Jeffery's reintroduction of the Farquharson in England. The Trade Farquharsons cover all the Farquharson rifles made by the many firms excepting Gibbs. These rifles enjoyed a very short period of importance from about the mid 1880s until 1905. Trade Farquharsons filled a void that no other firearms of the day could. They were the poor man's big game rifle. They were the work horse big game rifles, used to hunt the largest animals in both Africa and India.

The Farquharson Action made by Gibbs is one of the great legends in the history of the worlds' gunmakers. Of all the British single shots, it is the best known. The workmanship exhibited in these rifles is truly British Best! Gibbs rifles were made in match, military, rook and sporting styles. The match rifles, for ranges up to 1000 yards were the uncontested winners in England. The military rifles, used in military competitions were as fine as a match rifle. The rook rifles were delicate masterpieces on a small scale. Sporting rifles participated in the stalking hunts of Scotland but more importantly saw the big game fields of India and Africa. The famous hunter Selous used Gibbs rifles on some of his African hunts. This book will tell you the history and development and show you, in detailed photos and drawings, these famous Gibbs rifles. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. 311 pages. Hardcover with a dust jacket. In this volume we cover the Webley company, its history and the companies that were combined to make the firm. Also covered in detail are the rifles produced: the Scott-Field, Webley-Wyley, Model of 1897 and the famous Model of 1902. Webley was, during the 1800s and early 19090s the largest British manufacturer of sporting arms. This is not widely known because Webley was a wholesale maker and most of their production carries a retailer's name. This story and various models of single shot rifles that Webley produced will be studied in detail. The remaining sections of this volume will cover a little known rifle, the Ingram-Coster of 1897 of which only one is known. The history of the two major makers of British ammunition, Eley and Kynoch as well as their activities and developments from black powder days, through Cordite and its problems and the development of Nitro for black loads, comprises the balance of the book. Also included is a large section devoted to additional information and corrections of material covered in previous books in this series. Excellent. Language: eng Language: eng.

Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. 1st Edition. JUST PUBLISHED! 349 pages. Hardcover with a dust jacket. The very latest volume in the British Single Shot Rifle series by Wal Winfer and Rowe Publications. The saga of the sporting British single shot rifle continues with this story of the various hinged block actions. Included are the primary types such as the Snider, Soper and sporting Martinis but also included are the lesser known rifles using variations of this system. Some of the variants of the Martini were the Harston, Tranter and Swinburn designs which which saw some production. Winfer goes on to cover obscure types, some of which were the MacNaughton Martini, Dougal, Walker & Money and many others, which were patented, but production was very limited often with just a handful of examples made. On to the Snider which has very interesting history as the military rifle which bridged the gap between the muzzle loaders and the cartridge era. Civilian versions were produced and large numbers were made. Finally the Soper, a really interesting design that never gained wide acceptance. As with so many other makers Soper pinned his hopes on the holy grail: the big military contract that never came. Both military and civilian versions were made, in very limited numbers. Loaded with hundreds of illustrations, many in full color. An outstanding new book.
