Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. This volume gathers a surprising and engaging sampling of more than five hundred pieces of printed matter: material that circulated between the 1910s and the 1960s, with prints run of anywhere from a thousand to tens of thousands of copies. These ephemeral, utilitarian publications flooded streets, newspaper stands, bookshops, and homes, in the common aim of disseminating an idealised image of what is considered typically Mexican. Drawn from private collections and the holdings of museums, with no claim to completeness, the material in Mexico: The Land of Charm ranges in size from stamps to posters, and includes supports such as books, illustrated magazines, photography magazines, songbooks and musical scores, almanacs and calendars, tourist guides and maps. The result is impressive, in terms of both individual examples and the collection as a whole: these images are now a part of Mexican history. SELLING POINTS: . Mexico. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. For almost two years he frequented these darkrooms, photographing them with a strategy that combined anonymity and ambiguity. The Dark Book contains 28 black-and-white photographs that function as the perfect metaphor for the equation of predator and prey that determines the dynamics between biological systems and their behaviour in certain contexts. The photographic project was conceived from the beginning to appear in book form. Shadows and silence. With a fine and penetrating gaze, Omar Gamez breaks open the surface of spaces designed for casual encounters between homosexual men in Mexico City. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Dialogue allows us to discover what makes us similar, but also what set us apart. It is the supreme challenge of our capacity to accept, where tension and contradictions, agreements and differences are resolved in a double gaze, in a common quest,A" begins writer Sandra Lorenzano in her introduction to Photographic Correspondences, which presents a volley of images e-mailed between Buenos Aires-based Marcelo Brodsky and Mexico city-based Pablo Ortiz Monasterio. Throughout the project, each photographer responded to the other's last image, poetically, playfully and intuitively combining the chance of a ready-made with the complexity of photographic memory. This volume's bold design reflects the artists' process: the spreads include one image by each artist, with the last image from the previous page repeated on the first page of the next spread. Seeing each image twice creates an uncanny and suggestive vibe, replicating the instantaneous method in which the photographers worked and causing the viewer to draw unconscious connections. Throughout the project, each photographer responded to the other's last image, poetically, playfully and intuitively combining the chance of a ready-made with the complexity of photographic memory Shipping may be from our Sydney, NSW warehouse or from our UK or US warehouse, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. There were pieces of graffiti in every language, such as: "My name is Juan, I'm from Colombia, I only wanted a better life. Time went by and I returned to England. I worked in an Italian restaurant, saved up some money, and travelled. Years later I returned to Europe, specifically to Madrid, and did the same: I worked, I saved money, I studied photography a little, and without knowing where my work as a photographer was leading, I began to photograph African and East Indian immigrants. On my return to Mexico, I learned about the Central American immigrants who travel to the United States on freight trains. I began to explore the lives in rehabilitation of those who had lost limbs after falling off the trains in which they were traveling. The project grew and I decided to move to the southern border between Mexico and Guatemala. At that point I realized the problem goes beyond the question of a physical frontier and a group of immigrants boarding trains to the United States. I travelled to Honduras for the first time, and spent four years learning why Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador have become the principal exporters of workers to the United States. Deported from London the first time attempting to enter the United Kingdom, refused entry because they suspected he was going there to work. He was enclosed in a room with others of doubtful immigration status. On the way back to Mexico, during a stopover in Dallas, he was confined to a cell in the airport. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. The Mexican immigrant worker in New York is a perfect example of the hero who has gone unnoticed. It is common for a Mexican worker in New York to work extraordinary hours in extreme conditions for very low wages which are saved at great cost and sacrifice and sent to families and communities in Mexico who rely on them to survive. The Mexican economy has quietly become dependent on the money sent from workers in the US. Conversely, the US economy has quietly become dependent on the labor of Mexican immigrants. Along with the depth of their sacrifice, it is the quietness of this dependence which makes Mexican immigrant workers a subject of interest. The principal objective of this series is to pay homage to these brave and determined men and women that somehow manage, without the help of any supernatural power, to withstand extreme conditions of labor in order to help their families and communities survive and prosper. This project consists of 20 color photographs of Mexican immigrants dressed in the costumes of popular American and Mexican superheroes. Each photo pictures the worker/superhero in their work environment, and is accompanied by a short text including the worker's name, their hometown in Mexico, the number of years they have been working in New York, and the amount of money they send to Mexico each week. The works show the relation of West's production with people, playing with the implications of museum display, whose power lies in the transformation of what museums contain into cult objects. Spiral. Condition: new. Spiral. They are casual and somewhat absurd portraits taken during military exhibitions, patriotic ceremonies, and war games. By abandoning the formality expected in representations of military display, these portraits turn out to be disconcerting, as they explore ironically the signs of identity, rank, and belonging of members of the military establishment. In a highly militarized region, where the wounds caused by recent military dictatorships are still open, this work generates questions about the meaning of these forces in the contemporary world. The series In Uniform was the winner of the second edition of the RM Latin American Photobook Competition, selected by a jury made up of Martin Parr, Horacio Fernandez, Jonathan Roquemore, Dieter Neubert, Iata Cannabrava, Marcos Lopez, Paolo Gasparini, Olivier Andreotti, and Ramon Reverte. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The walls of an architecture in ruins, scored, scarified, discoloured by saltpeter, in Chile, Argentina, Colombia, Peru, Cuba, Mexico, bear the wounds of time and the traces of political struggles. The stones of the ancient civilizations were torn up and divested of their colouring to construct the modernist utopia, but neither urban ghosts nor the spectre of revolution have saved Latin America from the abyss of violence. The Mexican Revolution, the very first of the twentieth century, would dwindle down into the dictablanda of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional. A few decades later, the hopes of the Cuban revolution would come to wrack in disillusion. In other parts of the hemisphere, attempts at consolidating democracy were dragged down by authoritarian regimes and civil war. An informal economy has been sustained by the drug trade that also finances guerrilla movements and penetrates the very workings of government. These photographs, many of them scratched, scarified, incised, inhabited by the lacerations of an entire region, trace the lineaments of a tortured landscape. SELLING POINTS: . Battered Latin America is is the latest project of Alexis Fabry, curator and connoisseur of the photographic reality of Latin America . The photographs, scratched, slit or torn, haunted by the wounds of a continent, outline the shape of an oppressed landscape of Latin America's non-egalitarian societies . In a selection of carefully studied images, the book contains the work of the most important photographers of Latin American such as Pablo Ortiz Monasterio, Fernell Franco, Paz Ererazuriz, Luc Chessex, Johanna Calle, Paolo Gasparini or Graciela Iturbide to name a few 129 photographs These photographs, many of them scratched, scarified, incised, inhabited by the lacerations of an entire region, trace the lineaments of a tortured landscape. A lapse of time moving from full to empty, in which the dwelling gradually loses its household attributes and ceases to be inhabitable, to be transformed into a desolate space. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Sociological readings of our globalized twenty-first-century world begin to be full of impossibilities: defining the "Latino" phenomenon in the United States is one of these. Any attempt to identify either differential traits or a common denominator for Latinos in the US tends to fail. It is always possible to find some contradiction that fundamentally delegitimizes the common trait believed to be discovered. This is the major issue faced by Latin/US and also one of its principal stimulants. The Latino community is a work-in-progress that is updated with new material every minute. Nevertheless, we can certainly find factors and conditions that awaken and encourage a marked sense of community. Latin/US therefore starts by questioning the Latino stereotypes that appear to us with the immediacy of automatic references. We question the stereotype not because it is not representative, or because it fails to reflect the experience of the community, but rather because there is nothing new in it. The Latino experience in the United States is a changing reality that has evolved, mutated, regenerated and reinvented itself since its origins.Latin/US is a visual exploration from different viewpoints, offering a multifaceted vision that does not seek to identify, frame, or contain. It simply draws an imaginary map of visual narratives and modes of representation defined in terms of the identity and creative spirit of "Latino" reality. First in-depth repertoire of new Latin American photographers working in the USA Sociological readings of our globalized twenty-first-century world begin to be full of impossibilities: defining the "Latino" phenomenon in the United States is one of these. The writers have some kinship with the artists and create pieces of fiction or poetry that accompany the images. Thus, Daido Moriyama, Candida Hofer, and Andres Serrano, are matched up with Michel Bulteau, Antoine Volodine, and Mario Bellatin, while the designers establish a penetrating dialogue with the artists and writers. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Ivan Alechine, known as a poet and writer, born in Brussels and a resident of Paris, asked himself in the early 1995 about the interrelation between ecological damage and the disappearance of common sense. An angel (John Lilly, Jr.) whispered in his ear: "If you want to convince the newspapers that it's an emergency, take photos, exhibit your photos, and then write your articles (your texts)." Mexico offered him an opportunity to look reality in the face. From 1993 to 2005, with a Mexican press card in his pocket, he crisscrossed the country from north to south and from east to west. Little by little, the photography took on its own weight, its independence. Well off the beaten track, Poca Luz is the book of a Mexico at dawn, a Mexico tinged with blue in which the writer-photographer seems to be adrift. The only thing that will save him from the storm is the click of the shutter. In addition to its primary meaning ("little light"), the title Poca Luz alludes to the phrase "poca madre," used in Mexican popular speech to express indignation or admiration. "It is the situation of Mexico today," according to Ivan Alechine. "The light is dying. Here as elsewhere." Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Anarene is a book that was born from an eight-year photographic project made by Mikel Bastida in the United States. In the spirit of referencing the ghost town in Archer County, Texas, portrayed in Peter Bogdanovich's film adaptation of Larry McMurtry's novel The Last Picture Show, the author has travelled the country looking for images and stories that cinema has left behind. The photographs show us the America battered by the story: a land consumed by its own myth, landscapes that become a chronicle of the power of cinema, images of images that tell us about places that do not matter for what they are, but for what they have represented. Anarene presents a territory full of people and lost and forgotten objects, their stories survive, marginalized, suspended in a time and space that was taken from them. This volume gives value to those fragments found in the ruins of fiction, with the United States used as a background to the stories. SELLING POINTS: . Anarene is a book that will appeal to a film and photography lover's sensitivity to light and storytelling. . An eight-year photographic artistic project that reveals powerful colour and solitude in the US' true backyard. .
