Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Commemorating the 50th year since the 1973 Civil-Military Coup in Chile, spearheaded by Augusto Pinochet, Chilean photographer Toro-Goya delves deeply into the harrowing subject of the Forced Disappearances that occurred between 1973 and 1990. For decades, military forces pursued, tortured, and hid those who stood against the Pinochet regime. Currently, about 1500 individuals remain unaccounted for in Chile, with their families persistently seeking answers. Procession, released by Editorial RM, showcases a meticulously curated visual narrative by Toro-Goya, in partnership with the Association of Relatives of Disappeared Detainees from La Serena, Chile. In this piece, characters grapple with the agonizing potential of discovering their vanished loved ones through a fictional narrative. A tangible tension intertwines the narrative and documentary elements, employing Baroque stylistic techniques, a style Toro-Goya dubs as Baroque Documentarism. This work, dedicated to the memory of the vanished, stands as a poignant historical testament where the representative body transforms into a symbolic reality, bridging the memory voids for those in ceaseless pursuit. 35 illustrations Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. An updated archive of Alys' long-term study of children's enduring need for play. Since 1999, Belgian multimedia artist Francis Alys (born 1959) has been producing videos that document the games that children play on the street and in courtyards around the world. Children's Games is an ongoing archive of the urban practices that modernity has banished from everyday life, as the concepts of public space and free time have grown increasingly distorted by the domination of motor vehicles and electronic diversions. Many of these videos were shot in economically underdeveloped regions of the world, where the strength of tradition and community have allowed the shared life of a childhood on the street to survive. The children's games that Alys captures gesture toward a threatened underground culture crossing generations and borders. Their rules, images and references suggest an ancient, potent substrate underlying our shared experience. SELLING POINTS: . Francis Alys is a Belgian-born, Mexico-based former architect turned artist whose relational work blends art, architecture and social practice. The ongoing Children's Games film project documents games children play on the street and in courtyards around the world. . Since 1999, Alys has been producing videos that document the games that children play on the street and in courtyards around the world. . Alys' body of works encompasses many forms of media such as video, installations, paintings and drawings. . Many of the videos have been shot in relatively economically underdeveloped regions of the world, where the strength of tradition and community have allowed childhood on the streets to survive. 167 images Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Mexican architect and painter Juan O'Gorman (190582) had a spectacular debut as an architect, designing his own house at the age of 24. On the strength of this building, Diego Rivera commissioned O'Gorman to design a pair of studio-houses for himself and Frida Kahlo on contiguous lots, connected by a bridge. But O'Gorman was somewhat forgotten in histories of modern architecture, until the restoration of Rivera's and Kahlo's house in the late 1990s led to a rediscovery of the architect's work and a reappraisal of his place in contemporary Mexican architecture. In 2013 O'Gorman's own first house, which he began designing in 1929 and completed in 1931, was restored. Uncompromisingly radical and rigorously functional, this design reveals O'Gorman as a Mexican pioneer of avant-garde architecture. Casa O'Gorman 1929 tells the story of this unique building and how it was salvaged through beautiful colour photographs. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. When Frida Kahlo died, her husband Diego Rivera asked the poet Carlos Pellicer to turn the Blue House into a museum that the people of Mexico could visit to admire the work of the artist. Pellicer selected those of Frida's paintings which were in the house, along with drawings, photographs, books, and ceramics, maintaining the spaces just as Frida and Diego had arranged them to live and work in. The rest of the objects, clothing, documents, drawings, and letters, as well as over 6,000 photographs collected by Frida in the course of her life, were put away in bathrooms converted into storerooms. This remarkable collection remained hidden for more than half a century. A few years ago the storerooms, wardrobes, and trunks that safeguarded it were opened. The collection of photographs is a treasure that reveals the tastes and interests of the famous couple, not only through the images themselves but also through the annotations made on them. The collection allows us to speculate about Frida's and Diego's likes and dislikes, and makes it possible to document their family origins. Photography had always been a part of Frida's life. Her father Guillermo Kahlo was one of the great photographers of Mexico at the beginning of the twentieth century, whose images of colonial architecture and numerous selfportraits have been preserved. Frida's collection constitutes a roll call of great photographers: Man Ray, Brassai, Martin Munkacsi, Pierre Verger, George Hurrell, Tina Modotti, Edward Weston, Manuel and Lola Alvarez Bravo, Gisele Freund, and many others, including Frida Kahlo herself. It is likely that many of the photographs in the collection were taken by her, though we can only be sure of the few that she decided to sign in 1929. 401 photographs This remarkable collection remained hidden for more than half a century. A few years ago the storerooms, wardrobes, and trunks that safeguarded it were opened. The collection of photographs is a treasure that reveals the tastes and interests of the famous couple Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Minerva Cueva's aesthetic practice can be situated at the interface between political action and exercises of social self-determination. Among the central themes she has addressed through her work are the commodification of natural resources all over the world, the social causes and consequences of climate change and the neoliberal mechanisms of power that exist in both the private and public realm. Cuevas works across a variety of media, including film, performance, installations and murals, whereby the process of conducting research is a key component of her artistic method. In a clear gesture of non-compliance and resistance, she frequently appropriates the language of the establishment, such as institutional branding and commercial advertising. An associative approach to the oeuvre allows interconnections to come to the fore. SELLING POINTS: . Minerva Cuevas is one of the most internationally recognised Mexican conceptual artists. . This first monograph of the artist brings together a large selection of projects realized since the 1990s, allowing for diverse and flexible interpretations of the artist's work. . Her prolific international practice is grounded in conceptually and socially engaged actions. She creates political and social interventions and irreverently tampers with corporate and government identities. . Cuevas' work is held in many permanent collections including: the Tate, Centre Georges Pompidou, Guggenheim, MUAC, UNAM, Mexico City, Museum Ludwig, Cologne and the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven. 193 images Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.
