59pp. Dbd. Titlepage with institutional blind and ink stamps. Some tanning. Good plus. Second, much scarcer, edition of John Marshall's opinion in this case of financial estate and contract law before the Circuit Court in Virginia in 1825. A rare case from when the Supreme Court still sat on circuits. The main point of contention was over a contract to sell land in an estate in order to settle debts. Marshall found in favor of Macon and dismissed the suit. OCLC locates only four copies; not in Cohen or Shoemaker.

Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. 6 volumes. Plain brown leather with black title labels on the spine. Boards are scuffed and worn. Spines darkened and dry. The original black labels on the spine say "Randolph's Reports." Another label with volume number appears below. Another black label has been attached above, with the name "James Mann." Pages are faded and somewhat foxed from age and poor paper quality. Volume 1 has 491 pages. Both boards detached but present. Very faint pencil name on front endpaper (also detached) says "R. K. Meade." Beneath that, again "R. Kidder Meade." This may be Richard Kidder Meade, a VA Congressman, slave-owner, and Confederate. Volume 2 has 603 pages. Title page dated 1824. Scuffs to the binding, but boards and pages all intact. Volume 3 has the name "E.M. Mann" in pencil on the second blank page. Title page dated 1826. 614 pages. Text block tight, board attached, but brittle. Volume 4 title page dated 1827. 668 pages + 59 page index. Volume 5 dated 1828. 736 pages. Binding tight and complete. Volume 6 dated 1829. Published by Samuel Shepherd & Co. The name Edwin M. Mann signed on the front endpaper in pencil. The name R.K. Meade beneath, also in pencil. The name R. Kidder Meade signed on the next blank. 790 pages. The complete set, with interesting VA provenance, will not will any beauty contests. They are chipped and worn, with a fragile feel to them, despite the fact that covers are attached and pages largely unread. I have not identified the James Mann whose name appears on the spine. The other signature, Edwin M. Mann may be Edmund Murray Mann, who was a judge in Petersburg VA, and whose younger brother was Governor of VA. I have more than a dozen volumes of similar titles with the James Mann label on the spine in other listings today. Please email with questions or to request photos.

Previously owned by the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Abraham Rees (1743-1825) was a British clergyman best known for this, his outstanding encyclopedic work, The Cyclopaedia. (Initially published 1802-1820 in parts in Great Britain.) Rees' work not only featured theological and humanistic issues, but also extensive articles on mathematics and natural sciences. The Cyclopaedia, "is the richest work for technology of the period, with detailed text and handsome, carefully prepared plates." Ferguson, Eugene. "Contributions to Bibliography in the History of Technology (part II)". Technology and Culture 3.2 (1962): 169 p. "Rees was convinced that the important progress made during the last decades of the eighteenth century, especially in the fields of history, geography, geology, natural history, and the physical sciences senu lato, required a new type of encyclopedia with the accent on these fields as well as the still relatively undeveloped domains of biography and the history of sciences. The Cyclopaedia thus became one of the first works of its kind to be compiled with the help of 'persons eminently distinguished in these branches of science to which they had devoted their talents.'" (Taxon Vol. 35, No. 2 (1986), 452-453.) Some of the notable contributors to this work were Charles Bruney on music; Charles Koenig, Robert Bakewell, and John Farey on geology; John Dalton and Humphry Davy on chemistry; David Mushet on metallurgy; William Pearson on astronomy; James Edward Smith, William Wood, William Fitt Drake and William Woodville on botany. "Rees Cyclopaedia is one of the first works to interpret correctly William Smith's ideas on strata identification on the basis of fossil organisms." Ibid. The Cyclopaedia included other notable recent scientific breakthroughs, such as Robert Fulton's Cast Iron Aqueduct (described in his 1796 book) which would become his notable steam engine.
