Illustrated throughout in color and black and white reproductions of art. This is the course book that help launch the modern art collecting movement in Los Angeles in the late 1950's and 60's. Published in 1957 by the UCLA Extension Program, this Looking at Modern Painting was designed for the uninitiated student of 20th century painting and includes artists, biographies, a glossary of major movements and suggestions for further reading. The course was taught by UCLS graduate students in art history, among them James Demetrion, Henry Hopkings, Shirley Nielson, and Walter Hopps. Classes were held at the homes of wealthy students, who soon began to collect in earnest. This would have a significant impact on the art market by the mid-1960's, and several students went on to amass some of the most important collections of L.A. art.
