["Many believe that the moral mission of architecture has been in serious decline for the last 25 years. In this important new book, Tom Spector points out the dilemmas of architectural practice and offers a theoretical and practical basis for an examination and transformation of the quandaries the profession now faces. What makes a good building or a good architect? Are there limits to an architect's ethical or legal responsibilities in a building process where architecture plays an increasingly smaller role? Is preservation a moral imperative? What happens when building codes and ethical responsibilities are in conflict? In The Ethical Architect, Spector investigates the moral underpinnings and implications of leading architectural theories, subjecting them to the analytical techniques of moral philosophy. His conclusions provide a road map to help architects make the right decision in the difficult tradeoffs that confront designers on a daily basis: Spector estimates that more than 100,000 decisions go into the design of an average sized building. The Ethical Architect is a work of theory but refers to real buildings and real-world problems. It is Spector's call-to-arms for his profession and a must-read for practicing architects and students alike." - Publisher's description] Minor rubbing. Small bump to binding side edge. VG.

VG. 26x18cm, 208 pp "Over a remarkable career that spanned more than sixty years, Abram Games was a leading voice in 20th-century British graphic design. A modernist who used graphically charged symbols to catch the eye, he designed posters, signage, packaging, and other ephemera for such giants as the BBC, Shell, the Financial Times, Guinness, and the London Underground. During World War II, he was England's official war poster designer, a position from which he oversaw the design and production of hundreds of posters calling on Britons to stand fast and support the Allied troops. Abram Games: His Life and Work is the first monograph on this design legend whose work helped to define the look of modern English culture".

In Japan, where land is at a premium and public spaces are rare, the Forum, with its 2.7 hectares and unusual design of public space, was widely admired. Originating in Uruguay, Vinoly heads an architectural office with an impressive list of projects in the areas of architecture, urban planning and interior design, including significant buildings such as the Philadelphia Regional Performing Arts Center, Princeton University Stadium and the New Bronx Supreme Criminal Court Complex. In 1969 Vinoly founded his first office in Buenos Aires, which was influenced by the Modern Movement but also by the ideas and concepts of the 1960s reflected in the work of Buckminster Fuller, Archigram and the Smithsons. Due to the political situation he emigrated and opened an office in New York in 1982. Despite the difficulties involved in starting over again in a new country where in the meantime post-modernism was prevalent, Vinoly stayed true to his style of architecture, feeling bound to the ethical considerations of modernism yet constantly questioning it, adapting it to changing conditions. With offices in both New York and Tokyo, Rafael Vinoly Architects enjoys international success. This volume documents a large number of Vinoly's most significant buildings and projects. It includes an essay by Joan Ockman and texts by Rafael Vinoly on his career, which has been marked by the difficult political situation in Argentina and the cultural exchange between South America, Europe and.
