In 1825 26 year old Bridget Cleary disappeared from her house in rural Tipperary. At first, some said that the fairies had taken her into their stronghold in a nearby hill, from where she would emerge, riding a white horse. But then her body was found in a shallow grave. her husband, father, aunt and cousins were arrested and charged, while newspapers in nearby Clonmel, and then in Dublin, Cork, London and further afield attempted to make sense of what had happened. In this lurid and fascinating incident, set in the dawn of the twentieth century, we wirness the collision of town and country, of superstition and scepticism, of old and new. The torture and burning of Bridget Cleary caused a sensation in its own time and continues to reverberate almost 200 years later. Ref V2.

In 1879, armed only with their spears, their rawhide shields, and their incredible courage, the Zulus challenged the might of Victorian England and, initially, inflicted on the British the worst defeat a modern army has ever suffered at the hands of men without guns. This definitive account of the rise of the Zulu nation under the great ruler Shaka and its fall under Cetshwayo has been acclaimed for its scholarship, its monumental range, and its spellbinding readability. The story is studded with tales of drama and heroism: the Battle of Isandhlwana, where the Zulu army wiped out the major British column; and Rorke's Drift, where a handful of British troops beat off thousands of Zulu warriors and won eleven Victoria Crosses. Unlike earlier editions this copy has the benefit of sixteen pages of black and white photographs Ref SS4.

The eccentricities of the Hervey family in the eighteenth century caused it to be said that when God created the world he made men, women, and Herveys. By far the most eccentric of them all was Frederick Hervey (the subject of this biography), Earl of Bristol and Bishop of Derry. Traveller, politician, rabble-rouser, scholar, collector and the subject of a series of amorous adventures, his life was a continual source of amazement to his contemporaries. Horace Walpole condemned his profligate folly, John Wesley praised his plenteous good works, and George 111 denounced his as 'that wicked prelate'. As a patron of the arts he was responsible for building three great houses, of which Ickworth in Suffolk is now the only survivor. As a traveller he spent money lavishly and startled foreigners by his extraordinary dress (the many Bristol hotels in Europe are named after him). In politics he was a staunch Whig and though an Anglican Bishop he bravely defended the rights of Catholics and Presbyterians in Ireland, joining vigorously in the movement for emancipation and reform. His political intrigues in Europe at the time of the French Revolution landed him, for a brief spell, in prison but failed to suppress his irresistible zest for life and adventure. Frederick Hervey lived the sort of life that was well suited to Brian Fothergill's biographical penchants that always flourished on the more outre margins of eighteenth and early nineteenth century history. Faber Finds is reissuing four of Brian Fothergill's books: "The Cardinal King", "The Mitred Earl", "Nicholas Wiseman" and "The Strawberry Hill Set" Ref AA2.

The troubles in Palestine between the end of World War II and the declaration of the state of Israel on May 14, 1948, ruptured Middle Eastern history and left an indelible mark on the modern world. Chronicling in gripping detail this critical period that led, for the Jews, to the establishment of their national homeland, and, for the Palestinians, to their Nakba ("Catastrophe"), this book gives powerful expression to all those who took part in these stirring events: Britons, Jews, and Arabs alike. Drawing on a rich medley of official documents, private papers, biographies, memoirs, diaries, letters, newspapers, novels, songs, plays, and reminiscences, this book vividly reconstructs the attitudes and experiences of the many diverse participants. Whether foot-soldiers or generals, politicians or diplomats, dissidents, terrorists, writers, teachers, or simply men and women on the street, each voice tells its own story, and is woven into a compelling historical narrative that shifts seamlessly from one level of experience to another. A journey of literary and historical detection, across continents, cultures and centuries, to uncover the fictional personality of Defoe's Moll Flanders. Daniel Defoe's fictional heroine Moll Flanders is famous for her criminal and sexual adventures, racily portrayed on big and small screens. But who was she? And what world did she really inhabit? To answer these questions Moll takes its readers on a journey of literary and historical detection, across continents, cultures and centuries. Following Moll's tumultuous life, the story moves from Jacobean England to Jamestown, Virginia; from the English Civil War to the struggles of the Powhatan Indians; from the English Restoration to Maryland's slave-worked tobacco farms; and from the metropolis of London to the hamlet of Annapolis in the early eighteenth century. Introducing us to a rogues' gallery of real-life versions of Moll, it is as fast-moving and rich in incident as Defoe's great novel. Ref NNN 2.

softcover, 6" x 9" 438 pages Augusta Leigh was the child of one of the most sensational scandals to hit Georgian England - the seduction of the beautiful Marchioness of Carmarthen by 'Mad Jack' Byron. Augusta's marriage to her cousin brought her nothing but poverty and seven children. Her love affair with her half-brother, Lord Byron contributed to his split from his wife, who waged a relentless war of attrition against her. This is the first biography of Augusta Leigh for 30 years and draws on a wealth of new material. A stamp reading 'Reading Copy Only' has been applied to the bottom edges - and crossed through in ballpoint. Book in VERY GOOD condition.

softcover, 6" x 9¼" 542 pages Highland soldiers were Britain's first colonial levies, initially raised to police their own hills, then expended in imperial wars. The Gaelic people of the 18th century, three per cent only of the population, none the less supplied the Crown with sixty-five regiments. The Highlanders were often recruited by threat, and sold by chiefs he trusted. The family he hoped to protect by enlistment was frequently evicted in his absence and replaced by sheep. This book is the first account of the mutinies which followed, much of it in the words of the soldiers. Finchley, Glasgow Greens, Culloden, Glencoe, Fencibles. Ours is an ex-library copy in transparent protective covering, with usual stamps, stickers, etc. Sound binding. Book in VERY GOOD condition.

In this book he sets out his evidence that Harold only lost because of an incredible run of bad fortune and some treachery from the Saxon elite in England.
