He is rushed to the hospital, where surgeons struggle to save his life. At the same hospital, Professor Ranjip Singh is experimenting with a device that can erase traumatic memories. Then a terrorist bomb detonates. In the operating room, the president suffers cardiac arrest. He has a near-death experience, but the memories that flash through Jerrison s mind are not his own. It quickly becomes clear that the electromagnetic pulse generated by the bomb amplified and scrambled Professor Singh s equipment, allowed a random group of people to access one another s minds. And now one of those people can retrieve President Jerrison s memories including classified information regarding the upcoming military mission, which, if revealed, could cost countless lives. In ten stunning and bleak tales set in the woodlands, swamps, and chemical plants along the Alabama River, Tom Franklin stakes his claim as a fresh, original Southern voice. His lyric, deceptively simple prose conjures a world where the default setting is violence, a world of hunting and fishing, gambling and losing, drinking and poaching a world most of us have never seen. In the chilling title novella (selected for the anthologies New Stories from the South: The Year's Best, 1999 and Best Mystery Stories of the Century), three wild boys confront a mythic game warden as mysterious and deadly as the river they haunt. And, as a weathered, hand-painted sign reads: "Jesus is not coming;" This terrain isn't pretty, isn't for the weak of heart, but in these desperate, lost people, Franklin somehow finds the moments of grace that make them what they so abundantly are: human. Edward Frederic Benson OBE (1867 1940) was an English novelist, biographer, memoirist, archaeologist and short story writer. The Mapp and Lucia series, written relatively late in his career, consists of six novels and two short stories. The novels are: Queen Lucia, Miss Mapp, Lucia in London, Mapp and Lucia, Lucia's Progress (published as The Worshipful Lucia in the United States) and Trouble for Lucia. The short stories are "The Male Impersonator" and "Desirable Residences". Both appear in anthologies of Benson's short stories, and the former is also often appended to the end of the novel Miss Mapp, although that is not the case here. The Mapp and Lucia books were my mother's favorites and my son and I have loved them too. They are hilarious English Village pieces and you will be glad you discovered them. Mapp and Lucia are mortal enemies and their rivalry hilarious turns. The other denizens of the village are amusing as well. Laugh-out-loud in a genteel sort of way. We have read them over and over. ; Make Way for Lucia; Vol. 3; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 320 pages.

Black Foot author James Welch's novel is a stunning depiction of loss, rejection and disconnection of a man struggling to piece himself together and find wholeness and finding solace at the bottom of a bottle. The central character is disconnected and slowly withdraws into himself. The story gives stark characterizations and descriptions of the Montana countryside. There are rich poignant metaphors. Loney s dog is old, deaf, blind in one eye and flinches when touched until he can figure out who is touching him. He comes home everyday from his jaunt in the community until one day he doesn t. Loney looks for the dog and finds his body frozen to the ground after he looses his struggle to survive. Although Loney is a Half-Breed living in Montana he is Everyman and the explosive ending is replayed often today. Welch was a leader in the Native American Literary Renaissance. Wallace Stegner called this "A major contibution to Native American literature." ; 12mo 7" - 7½" tall; 179 pages.

An ancient Athabascan Indian legend, handed down from mother to daughter, retold by mother to Velma Wallis who now hands it on to many. Long, long ago before arrival of Western culture, in the cold, hard days of Alaska winter, the tribal chief, in consulation with The People's Council, announced that in the face of starvation the aged who could no longer contribute to the well being of the whole are not to travel with the tribe. So begins a new phase of life for two very old women, who, frankly, had dined on their aches and pains adroitly to avoid work.
