In this lucid account of a civilization that lasted for more than a thousand years Professor Talbot Rice, a leading authority on the period, provides full and reasoned answers to these questions. He shows that the picture of a steady decline suggested by the title of Gibbon's great work is not a true one, but rather that Byzantium served as a basic source of cultural inspiration throughout the whole period which we know as " the Dark Ages, " when, to quote Lethaby, " there was little in the world that was not either Byzantine or Barbarism." And even when a new age of culture dawned in the West with the second millennium, the debt to Byzantium remained considerable for several centuries. Still more important was the legacy it left in the Orthodox world. Constantinople was the " second Rome" and in Russian eyes Moscow was the third; without some knowledge of Byzantine history it is virtually impossible to understand the essence of Russian thought. The Byzantines sheds a new light on the history of the Eastern Mediterranean area, and helps us toward a more balanced view of European history as a whole. The book contains a fine selection of plates illustrating the life and the art and architecture of the period.

The Atlantic Ocean and connected waterways played a vital role in the prehistory and early history of Western Europe. This tradition of coastal navigation, beginning in the mesolithic period, has continued almost unbroken into modern times: the Celtic Saints and the Viking raiders travelled these early routes, as did the pilgrims of the Middle Ages; not even the trans~oceanic crossings of the Age of Discovery eliminated the time~honored coastal traffic, and echoes of this tradition exist today. A scientific network of established sites and finds has clarified and augmented the ancient literary sources which first provided clues to early maritime activity. Evidence gleaned from numerous archaeological sites illustrates the ingenuity of prehistoric navigators, who avoided sailing around stormy headlands in their frail skin~boats by disembarking on one side of a peninsula and then moving overland to the other side before resuming their journey by water. This extensive maritime activity united the shorelands of Western Europe in a single culture, explaining the presence of lrish gold ornaments and Bronze Age weapons in lands as far apart as Scotland, Wales, Cornwall, Brittany and Portugal. In a geographical rather than a chronological survey Professor Bowen discusses many fascinating topics, including the colonization of Atlantic Europe, the trade in gold from Ireland in the Early Iron Age and the spread of Christianity in the Dark Ages. The text is illuminated by numerous photographs, line drawings and maps which further elucidate the western sea routes and the traders, seafarers and pilgrims who sailed the margins of the western ocean from Iceland to Spain for a period of over five millennia.

Yet for nearly half a millennium they ruled an empire in the Iranian regions that ultimately both linked and rivaled the Roman and Chinese empires, and their armies more than once defeated in battle the military might of Rome. Dramatic archaeological discoveries have recently thrown a flood of new light on the origins, history, and civilization of this people. The author explains who the Parthians were, tells how they rode south from the central Asian steppes to inherit the eastern portion of the enormous empire of Alexander the Great from his Seleucid Greek successors, and how expansion westward brought contact with Rome, then conflict ~ from time to time violently renewed. He presents varied aspects of Parthian life: the peculiar system of government, as far as it is known at present, the language, and the law, coinage, taxation, and other aspects of official life; he discusses the unsatisfactory basis of Parthian economics, the energetic pastimes and daily life of the people, the various and sometimes repellent religious and funerary customs and the questions of the extent to which Zoroastrianism was practiced. The Parthians were the first Orientals to feel the full impact of Greek civilization. The chapters on Parthian architecture and art show how characteristic styles were developed, out of which emerged elements that even today influence Iranian arts and crafts. Finally, after sketching the legendary fall of the Parthian monarchy, the author attempts an assessment of the overall achievement of this colorful people.
