Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 273 pp. First published by Doubleday in USA in 1989; this copy, First Paperback printing, Stated: "Published in Penguin Books 1990" with '1' in number line. [The author is NOT Mary McGarry Morris.] Glossy pink wraps with author name and title in dark green across top and bottom front cover, respectively; color illustration of woman in green dress, smoking, in restaurant booth with companion, at middle front cover; '$8.95' price on rear cover bottom left corner. A very slight-to-undetectable twist to spine; light toning around perimeters of pages; several pages (pp. 130-140) have small soft creases (nearly flat) on upper right corner (resembling dog-ears, but obviously not that, just accidental bumping of opened fore-edge); similar mishap, but of long thin soft creases from front cover to p. 42, from 1/4" to left of top right corner, diminishingly to 1/16" just below midpoint: it all describes much worse than it is, but there you have it. Binding tight (NO cracks); hint of curls at corners, though essentially square; NO remainder marks. Clean text. Flatsigned by author on title page; also inscribed warmly to previous owner by Given name on second flyleaf verso, dated, location of signing cited, and signed again. Paperback Collectible. Soft cover. Condition: NF. No Jacket. Photos, Art, Drawings, Maps (illustrator). 1st. Systamatic archaeological investigations in NZ did not begin until the early 1960s, although there had long been intererst in this aspect of the origins of Maori. A few years earlier the NZ Archaeological Society was esablished and this did not only encourage field work but also had consequences in academia, with two NZ universities adding archaeology to courses. The NZ Hsitoric Places Trust, responsible for the supervision of historical sites, joined Penguin in the production of this book, marking a milestone in archaeological literature. This fine work outlines the resultant findings with much new information and detail regarding the earliest Maori , ranging over their physical and health characteristics, the manufacturing processes for stone and wood implements and wapons, their food sources. dwellings and other architecture, gardening and foraging, personal decoration, garments and domestic utensils, fortifications, culture and beliefs. While all these topics are covered in the text a host of illustrations, including many photographs of archaeological finds, provide a visual representation of Maoridom past. This graphic content includes some colour and many b/w photographs, a number of colour art works which reconstruct ancient Maori lifestyles, as well as many drawings, diagrams and maps. Noted Maori scholar and leader Sir Tipene O'Regan (Ngai Tahu) contributed two chapters presenting ".a Maori perspective on the work of archaeologists." He also acted as Maori consultant for the book. First edition from Penguin/Historic Places Trust of 1987, 175 pages including notes, bibliography, contributor profiles and index. illustrated throughout with photos, art, drawings, diagrams and maps. Card covers with colour photos front and back are NF with trace wear front corners, text block excellent, no inscrptions.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. A very clean copy which is signed by the author. An intriguing novel set in India and New Zealand; the past and the present . . . When family suddenly becomes your greatest challenge, mystery, rediscovery. As children in Calcutta, Ashim and Abhay made a small mistake that split their family forever. Thirty years later, Ashim has re-entered his brother's life, with blame and retribution on his mind. It seems nothing short of smashing Abhay's happy home will make good the damage from the past. At least, this is what Abhay and his wife Lena are certain is happening. A brother has travelled all the way from small-town India to New Zealand bearing ancient - and false - grudges, and with the implacable objective of blowing up every part of his younger brother's life. Reconciliation was just a Trojan horse. But is Ashim really the villain he appears to be, or is there a method to his havoc?. Signed by Author(s).

Book
Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Small twinked out inscription. Feels unread. This engaging memoir covers the first 25 years of Brian Edward's life in Northern Ireland during the 1940s and 1950s. His father abandoned his wife and son in dramatic circumstances when Brian was still a baby. He grew up in 'lodgings', often cared for by landladies who were mad, bad or simply sad, while his mother was at work. In his early teens Brian desperately tried to track down his mysterious father but to no avail. Years later he discovered that he had at least one half-sister and that his father may well have been a German spy, a bigamist and a charming con-man who embezzled funds from numerous employers. While Brian's relationship with his parents and their extended families lies at the heart of this book, Daddy was a German Spy is also a funny, poignant and intriguing story about growing up in Northern Ireland.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. A good reading copy only. Creasing to the wraps and some foxing. . . A reprint of Anne Salmond's classic book arising from her work with Te Whanau-a-Apanui and Ngati Porou elders Amiria and Eruera Stirling. This book arose from Eruera Stirling's determination to pass on the traditional knowledge entrusted to him in his childhood by tribal elders, and from his wish to explain to a younger generation the deeper meanings of an ancestral way of life. In this outline of tribal history and of contemporary race relations, he discusses traditional concepts such as mana, matauranga and whakapapa. This award-winning biography also contains vivid descriptions of life in the Bay of Plenty in the era of whaling, maize cropping and kumara growing, and an account of his work with Sir Apirana Ngata. Thus.
