In 1841 Peter Wilson, his wife and one child arrived in NZ from Great Britain and initially settled in Wanganui, later moving to New Plymouth where he was chief surgeon at the hospital. Catalyst for this boojk was a campaigh to restore the historic Cornwallis Wharf, which was a vital structure giving all-tide access to the settlement in its early days when the Manukau Harbour waters met the travel needs of residents and access to the city of Auckland. The wharf renewal project was completed in 1999 and recognition of this campaign was expanded to include a history of the Cornwallis area. The first land purchases there took place in the mid-1830s, but the history covers the pre-European Maori story too. Cornwallis was initially planned as a centre of importance on the Manaku, but this did not occur and after early settlement and development the district became a holiday destination for Aucklanders and others. This colourful "Bach period" is well covered in text and photographs, recalling very different beach holidays than those of today. A fine book, combining a project recalling the past with a general history of days now gone, but fondly remembered. First edition of 2002, 127 pages, well illustrated throughout with colour, sepia and b/w photos, drawing, maps, plans and document reproductions. Colour wrap-round art card covers are VG+ with small bump to lower front corner, signed by author on half-title, internally excellent. By Author.

This was so between the two world wars and for some years after the second. This account follows the service of ships of this class during World War Two, when they were involved in the first major naval engagement, the Battle of River Plate, to the Allied fleets standing off the shores of Japan when that country surrendered. Initially the ships involved were units of the Royal Navy, with a large number of NZers in the complement. In 1941 the Royal New Zealand Navy was officially established, withNH the ship replacing the HMS prefix with HMNZS. The major part of the book is devoted to the Achilles, Leander and Gambia, with HMS Neptune also covered. Neptune was a sister of the Achilles and Leander and was assigned to the NZ station, but \ diverted to the Mediterranean where, late in 1941 she was sunk with only one survivor. However, 150 of her crew were NZers and their loss was the heaviest in any single naval action. The author compiled a fine record of these ships, which served in virtually every theatre of the oceanic conflict. First edition of 1988. 164 pages including bibliography and index, numerous b/w photos, seven pages maps, battle charts at back. Card covers with Battle of River Plate action art illustration to front are VG+ with light crease lower front corner, internally near fine, no inscriptions or markings.

Hardcover. Condition: VG+. Dust Jacket Condition: VG+. Photos, Art (illustrator). 1st. From the 1830s to the early 1900s NZers were frequently worried by the possibility of expansion of the Russian Empire in the South Pacific, with their country a possible target for occupation. To some degree the concern was justified, with NZ virtually defenceless, the protective Royal Navy deployed only a small force based in Australia and strength in troops was even lower. In this interesting account of a near-forgotten earlier Cold War the author approaches his topic from military, political, international perpsectives, how NZ administrations approached the problem and the extensive programme of fortifications built to protect the major ports. A fascinating look as this aspect of Pacific history. 180 pages including appendix, abbreviations list, bibliography, index, 15 b/w illustrations --- photos, art, portraits. Brown hard covers with gilt spine titles VG+, text block excellent, no inscriptions. Tinted art DJ is VG+ with tiny chips spine top.
