This book has been revised and expanded to take account of the immense amount of serious competitive play in the decade since the first edition was completed in 1966. During this period the Petroff has gained a new supporter in the person of the former world champion Petrosian. Some commentators even attribute the loss of the title in 1969 to his failure to carry on playing the Petroff after it had brought him two comfortable draws late in the match against Spassky. Meanwhile, older supporters of the defence such as Smyslov and Bronstein have not lost faith in it. Even the former world title holder Karpov has adopted it occasionally. Book
Soft cover. Condition: Good. 381 pages with diagrams. Octavo (8" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First published in 1970. The Sicilian Defence is a chess opening that begins with the following moves: 1. e4 c5 The Sicilian is the most popular and best-scoring response to White's first move 1.e4. Opening 1.d4 is a statistically more successful opening for White because of the high success rate of the Sicilian defence against 1.e4.[1] New In Chess stated in its 2000 Yearbook that of the games in its database, White scored 56.1% in 296,200 games beginning 1.d4, but 54.1% in 349,855 games beginning 1.e4, mainly because the Sicilian held White to a 52.3% score in 145,996 games. 17% of all games between grandmasters, and 25% of the games in the Chess Informant database, begin with the Sicilian. Almost one quarter of all games use the Sicilian. Grandmaster John Nunn attributes the Sicilian Defence's popularity to its "combative nature": "in many lines Black is playing not just for equality, but for the advantage. The drawback is that White often obtains an early initiative, so Black has to take care not to fall victim to a quick attack." Condition: Edge wear, corners bumped and rubbed, spine rubbed, soiled and stained else good.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. viii+242 pages with diagrams and indexes. Royal octavo (8 1/4" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Second edition. The King's Indian Defence is a common chess opening. It arises after the moves: 1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 Black intends to follow up with 3.Bg7 and 4.d6 (the Grünfeld Defence arises when Black plays 3.d5 instead, and is considered a separate opening). White's major third move options are 3.Nc3, 3.Nf3 or 3.g3, with both the King's Indian and Grünfeld playable against these moves. The Encyclopaedia of Chess Openings classifies the King's Indian Defence under the codes E60 through E99. The King's Indian is a hypermodern opening, where Black deliberately allows White control of the centre with their pawns, with the view to subsequently challenge it. In the most critical lines of the King's Indian, White erects an imposing pawn centre with Nc3 followed by e4. Black stakes out their own claim to the centre with the Benoni-style .c5, or .e5. If White resolves the central pawn tension with d5, then Black follows with either .b5 and queenside play, or .f5 and an eventual kingside attack. Meanwhile, White attempts to expand on the opposite wing. The resulting unbalanced positions offer scope for both sides to play for a win. Condition: Corners bumped else near fine.

Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. xx+278 pages with diagrams and index. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Translated by Kenneth Neat and Heri-Bert Steimel. First edition. This is the third volume of the trilogy of this work. A Closed Game (or Double Queen's Pawn Opening) is a chess opening that begins with the moves: 1. d4 d5 The move 1.d4 offers the same benefits to development and center control as does 1.e4, but unlike with the King Pawn openings where the e4-pawn is undefended after the first move, the d4-pawn is protected by White's queen. This slight difference has a tremendous effect on the opening. For instance, whereas the King's Gambit is rarely played today at the highest levels of chess, the Queen's Gambit remains popular at all levels of play. Also, compared with the King Pawn openings, transpositions between variations are more common and important in the closed games. Condition: Edge wear, spine ends and corners bumped and rubbed, corners creased, front wrapper creased else about very good.

Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. viii+177 pages with diagrams and appendix. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. Translated by Kenneth P Neat. First English edition. The Catalan Opening is played in events of all standards. A notable feature of its development is the appearance of new, genuinely gambit ideas which have complicated and enriched the strategy of the opening and reflect the modern approach to chess. This volume comprises the Closed Variation - 1 d4 Nf6 2 c4 e6 3 g3 d5 4 Bg2 Be7 (as well as 4. Bb4+ and 4. c6), and a group of variations where the Catalan Opening is obtained from the Queen's Gambit after 1 d4 d5 2 c4 e6 followed by 3 Nf3 Nf6 4 g3, or 3 Nc3 Nf6 4 g3, or 3 g3. Condition: Points bumped and rubbed else near fine.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. xxxi+204 with frontispiece, photographs, diagrams, tables and appendices. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 7 3/4") bound in original publisher pictorial wrappers. Translated by Kenneth P Neat. (Lusis: 1842) First edition. In the spring of 1979, Lubomir Kavalek, along with Czech filmmakers Milos Forman and Ivan Passer, organized a double round robin tournament to be held in Montreal, Quebec from April 10th to May 7th. Dubbed "The Tournament of Stars," the event was attended by ten of the very strongest grandmasters at the time, including the world champion. The complete list of players was (in order of ELO): Anatoli Karpov (2705), Lajos Portisch (2640), Boris Spassky (2640), Bent Larsen (2625), Jan Timman (2625), Mikhail Tal (2615), Vlastimil Hort (2600), Robert Hübner (2595), Lubomir Kavalek (2590), and Ljubomir Ljubojevic (2590). As a result, the average ELO rating for the tournament was 2622, making "The Tournament of Stars" a category XV event. It was also one of the strongest tournaments ever organized at that time. The only two top-ten rated players missing were Bobby Fischer (who was reclusive at the time) and Viktor Korchnoi (who was being boycotted to secure Soviet participation). The players stayed at the Meridian Hotel overlooking downtown Montreal, and they played at the Quebec Pavilion. The prize fund for the event was $110,000 and the chief arbiter was Svetozar Gligoric. Portisch and Ljubojevic started out strong, but were eventually overtaken after the halfway point by the world champion Karpov and the then-current Soviet champion Tal. In the sixteenth round, Karpov fought hard to defeat Tal and gain the lead, but the former world champion held him to a draw. It was only by a brilliant win against Ljubojevic with the black pieces in the penultimate round that Karpov was able to tie Tal in the final round and share first place with him. A point and a half behind was Lajos Portisch with +10 1/2. Ljubomir Ljubojević was fourth with +9. Jan Timman and Boris Spassky shared fifth and sixth a half point behind. Seventh through ninth was shared by Lubomir Kavalek, Robert Hübner and Vlastimil Hort with +8. Last was Bent Larsen with a score of 5 1/2.Condition:Corners gently bumped, some light edge wear else a very good.
