This work has permitted him to create a ritual map of the Cyclades, delineating a network of pilgrimage and ceremonial sites in the period 2500-2000 BC. These discoveries have permitted Professor Renfrew to postulate a revolutionary cognitive interpretation of prehistoric archaeology. The analysis of the discoveries in a project involving numerous young researchers is continuing to contribute significantly to the study of the origins of ritual practices in the Aegean Sea.

Among the key elements of these Goals are food security, sustainable livelihoods, and social inclusion. However, little attention has been paid to the institutions needed to deliver these Goals. In the tenth Annual Balzan Lecture, Bina Agarwal, 2017 Balzan Prizewinner for Gender Studies, argues that the institutional transformation of agriculture is essential for increasing farm productivity, improving farmer welfare, and enhancing gender equality. In particular, she draws attention to the need for a model of farming that transcends the small family farms that dominate agriculture globally. Agarwal has been researching this issue for several years, and her Balzan Prize is funding a research project that further extends this work. Della vasta opera di traduttore e filosofo, l'Elogio del cane è forse il lavoro più breve e meno conosciuto ma è anche il testo che sicuramente si presta a una lettura assai gradevole e godibile. Occasione dello scritto è il dono di una cagnolina che egli fece a un illustre signore, cosa che gli permise di tessere le lodi di questo antico amico dell'uomo attraverso l'enumerazione delle sue innate qualità come la fedeltà, la versatilità, l'intelligenza, la natura amorevole e affettuosa. In tal modo, scorrendo l'Elogio, che viene presentato per la prima volta in una edizione moderna, si ha come l'impressione di avere un cane accanto a sé, quasi un doppio del dono che Gaza aveva realmente fatto, stavolta non all'illustre signore ma a noi che lo leggiamo più di cinque secoli dopo. Contemporary political theorists frequently say that there is only one coherent way of thinking about liberty, and that it consists in recognising that an individual is free so long as there is no interference with the exercise of his or her powers. In Thinking About Liberty: An Historian's Approach, Quentin Skinner shows that this is mere dogma by tracing a genealogy that considers different ways of thinking about liberty, a central concept in social and political thought in today's Western democracies. He isolates three distinct strands in the genealogy of modern liberty, including the above mentioned freedom as absence of interference (by external agencies or by the self), as well as two alternatives: freedom as absence of dependence (as in liber homo vs slave status) and freedom as self-realisation. In speaking as an historian, Skinner's chief concern is to excavate a way of thinking about freedom that has lately been in danger of getting lost.
