This book seeks to provide an answer to the essential questions of whether indeed the Rumanian historic tradition is compatible with the present communist order, whether the communists' claims are justified in terms of Rumania's historic experience in the twentieth century. The accent is on the twentieth century for two reasons. First, the direct ancestor of Communist Rumania is the greater Rumanian state established only at the end of World War I, and the contemporary national problems are rooted in those of Greater Rumania. Second, the Rumanian communist movement is also a product of the twentieth century, and its evolution and problems parallel those of the greater Rumanian state.
