Book
Cloth, 8vo, 33 cm, xi, [1], 279, [1] pp, 80 plates. From the blurb - "While many reference books are useful in establishing the date and maker of a piece of gold or silver ware, it is still difficult to trace details about goldsmiths themselves - their place of business, the shop-signs they used, the date they moved from one address to another, or whom they succeeded or followed. Even to find the dates when a particular goldsmith was working is not easy. The main feature of this extraordinarily rich book - first published in a limited edition in 1935 - is an alphabetical list of nearly seven thousand goldsmiths who worked in the City of London between 1200 and 1800. Eighty trade cards are reproduced, and the author explains the meaning of many signs and customs of the goldsmith s trade. Trade cards were primarily used as advertisements, to call attention to the name and whereabouts of the shopkeeper. They are the only contemporary sources which give us some idea of the goldsmiths signs, the articles made and sold and sometimes even the lay- out of the shop itself. " Chip to head of spine, otherwise Good in a used dustwrapper.
