Cloth, 4to, 29 cm, 159 pp, ills (some colour). From the blurb: "Ephemera has been collected for many years but only comparatively recently has it been widely accepted as material for academic study. This book is new in that it discusses ephemera as an aspect of design history, showing how function, process and period have effected [sic] the changing appearance of billheads, trade cards, flyers, playbills and other ephemera. The printing histories of Britain and America are closely woven. Colonial printers and engravers imported British type and equipment, took instruction from the same manuals and were guided by the same exemplars, a relationship that continued through the first half of the nineteenth century. It was in the years following the Civil War that American graphic design and typography began to establish their own identities, developments in colour printing bringing an efflorescence of colour-rich trade cards, cigar-box labels and other chromolithographed ephemera that was essentially American. Ideas travelled in both directions across the Atlantic. American founders devised wholly original new typefaces." Contents: The wooden press - The iron press - The rise of lithography - Advancing technology - Colour and special processes - Artistic printing - The Leicester free style - Process engraving and commercial art. Very Good in a dustwrapper with a small closed tear to the rear panel.
