First Edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dw, now mylar-sleeved. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 272 pages; Physical description: xxvi, 272 p. : illus., ports. ; 25cm. Subjects: Piltdown Forgery. Summary: The fragments of a skull found in the gravels at Piltdown in Sussex in 1912 were presented as the fossil remains of an early human form, and as such created a sensation at the time. During the next 40 years it became increasingly difficult to reconcile the Piltdown remains with later additions to the human fossil record, and there was growing suspicion about their authenticity. In the 1950s detailed scientific examination of the Piltdown material demonstrated conclusively that it had been deliberately faked. There was much speculation about the identity of the hoaxer, but no clear-cut evidence was forthcoming and the question has since remained in abeyance. Dr Spencer has made an extensive study of the original documents and the other available evidence, which he presents in this book, together with a new case for the identity of the individual responsible for the forgery. This volume and its companion, "The Piltdown Papers" will be of interest to all those studying the history of the 20th century and the nature of scientific enquiry. 1 Kg.

Book
Quarto,192 pp.,colour photographs, fine copy in dustwrapper. Chris Mattison describes the evolution and classification of frogs and toads, highlighting distinctive and notable species and providing detailed information about each of the 49 recognised families. He describes their eventful life-cycle, diverse habitats and the various methods they use to attract mates and hunt for food. For example, did you know that many frogs swallow prey whole and then use the undersides of their eyeballs to help push the food down their throats? The book also explores frogs' interaction with humans, from modern day collection for the meat trade, scientific research and the trade in exotic pets, to how their survival is threatened by over-exploration, habitat destruction, climate change and disease. Drawing on the latest research and the recently revised classification system, and illustrated with stunning colour photographs throughout, this guide will appeal to amateur naturalists and all those with an interest in the world of frogs and toads. Author information Chris Mattison is a natural history writer and photographer who specialises in reptiles and amphibians. He has written and illustrated over 20 books, mostly on the natural history of reptiles and amphibians and their responsible care and breeding in captivity. His photography regularly appears in books and magazines throughout the world, and he has been a runner-up in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition â " the international showcase for the very best photography featuring natural subjects. He was awarded a Fellowship of the Royal Photographic Society for a presentation of 20 photographs of reptiles and amphibians.
