Hardbound. Red cloth/boards with gilt spine lettering. xii, 292 pp. with 110 color and 188 bw plates and illustrations. Title on front cover: Italian Majolica in the Robert Lehman Collection. Presents examples of Italian majolica in the Robert Lehman Collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. "The brilliantly colored jars, jugs, and dishes collected by Robert Lehman document the history of Italian majolica from the beginning of the fifteenth century to the 1600s. The collection is most renowned for a magnificent group of pieces produced in the main Italian pottery centers during the High Renaissance, the golden age of majolica. The precious lusterware that was the specialty of Deruta and Gubbio, in central Italy, accounts for more than a third of the collection. Also spendidly represented are the neighboring towns of Castel Durante and Urbino, whose wares perhaps best exemplify the beauty and diversity of majolica of the early sixteenth century." (dj) The annotated and illustrated catalogue presentes 157 pieces in chronological order. VG (light scuffing to boards, missing dust jacket).

First Edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dw. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Literally as new and still in the publisher's protective shrink-wrap.; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 245 pages; Series: The Robert Lehman collection, 2. Physical description: x, 245 p. : ill. (some col.), ports. ; 29 cm. Summary: In this volume, forty-two remarkable paintings collected by Robert Lehman and his father, Philip Lehman, are discussed at length in light of recent technical and art historical research. Among the works catalogued here are Petrus Christus' "Goldsmith in His Shop" of 1449, which is justly famous as one of the first northern European paintings to depict everyday life, and Hans Memling's "Portrait of a Young Man" (ca. 1475-80), in which the sitter is posed before a landscape, a formula that had lasting repercussions in Italian as well as Northern art. Also included is Memling's "Annunciation", one of his finest and most original works. Well-known paintings by Simon Marmion, Jean Hey, Gerard David, Lucas Cranach the Elder and Younger, Hans Holbein, Gerard Terborch, Pieter de Hooch, Rembrandt, and El Greco all represent in their own way the best of the era and place in which they were created, as do masterful portraits by Francisco de Goya, George Romney, and Sir Henry Raeburn. All the paintings in the Robert Lehman Collection are reproduced in full color, supplemented by numerous comparative duotone illustrations.
