Also contains chapters on The Captain Kicked Mr. Fanning; No Places of Easy Service; Battle Stations; The Finest of Its Kind; and From Knowledge, Seapower. There are pencil drawings inside the front and back covers. Cover has some wear and soiling. The United States Naval Academy (USNA, Annapolis, or simply Navy) is a federal service academy adjacent to Annapolis, Maryland. Established on 10 October 1845, under Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, it is the second oldest of the five U.S. service academies, and educates officers for commissioning primarily into the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. The 338-acre (137 ha) campus is located on the former grounds of Fort Severn at the confluence of the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay in Anne Arundel County, 33 miles (53 km) east of Washington, D.C. and 26 miles (42 km) southeast of Baltimore. The entire campus (known to insiders as "the Yard") is a National Historic Landmark and home to many historic sites, buildings, and monuments. It replaced Philadelphia Naval Asylum, in Philadelphia, that served as the first United States Naval Academy from 1838 to 1845 when the Naval Academy formed in Annapolis. Candidates for admission generally must both apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a member of congress. Students are officers-in-training with the rank of midshipman. Tuition for midshipmen is fully funded by the Navy in exchange for an active duty service obligation upon graduation. Approximately 1,200 "plebes" (an abbreviation of the Ancient Roman word plebeian) enter the Academy each summer for the rigorous Plebe Summer. About 1,000 midshipmen graduate. Graduates are usually commissioned as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps, but a small number can also be cross-commissioned as officers in other U.S. services, and the services of allied nations. The academic program grants a bachelor of science degree with a curriculum that grades midshipmen's performance upon a broad academic program, military leadership performance, and mandatory participation in competitive athletics. Midshipmen are required to adhere to the academy's Honor Concept.

First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. First Edition, Second Printing. xix, [1], 939, [1] pages. Some cover and edge soiling. Name and address of previous owner Louis M. Tozzi) written in pencil inside front free endpaper. Tables. Figures. Footnotes. Formulae. Includes Foreword (by L. A. DuBridge), Preface, and Introduction, as well as chapters on Power Generation and Measurement, Microwave Power Measurements, Microwave Signal Generators, The Measurement of Wavelength, Frequency Measurements, The Measurement of Frequency Spectrum and Pulse Shape; The Measurement of Impedance and Standing Waves; Impedance Bridges; The Measurement of Dielectric Constants; Attenuators and Radiation Measurements; The Measurement of Attenuation; Directional Couplers; R-F Phase and Pattern Measurements; Manufacturers of Microwave Equipment; and an Index. The development and engineering of microwave radar equipment required that considerable effort be spent on improvements in the art of microwave measurements. New techniques had to be devised which were suitable for laboratory use, and these had to be modified and adapted for use in the field and in the factory. The necessity for the maintenance and the repair of military equipment imposed other special problems, and test gear had to be designed for these purposes also. It has been attempted in the present volume to select for description those techniques and apparatus which are most likely to prove useful to future workers in the microwave field rather than to attempt a compilation that approaches completeness. Emphasis has been placed on laboratory equipment. Among the Contributing Authors are: R. Beringer, R. N. Griesheimer, D. Hamilton, R. A. Howard, G. N. Kamm, S. Katz, R. L. Kyhl, R. V. Pond, E. M. Purcell, R. M. Redheffer, E. Weber, H. R. Worthington, and L. B. Young. Louis Tozzi received a BS in EE from Newark College of Engineering (now the New Jersey Institute of Technology) in 1950, and the Ph.D. in EE from the University of Maryland in 1970. After graduation from the Newark College of Engineering he went to work for the Ordnance Development Division of the National Bureau of Standards (NBS) in Washington DC. The Ordnance Development Division was transferred from NBS Department of Commerce to the Department of the Army in 1951 and became the Diamond Ordnance Fuze Laboratory and later the Harry Diamond Laboratories. (NBS is now (NIST) the National Institute of Standards and Technology.) During the period from 1950 through September 1986 Louis Tozzi was employed by the Harry Diamond Laboratories and its predecessor organizations where the major focus of his work was in research and development of proximity and radar fuzing systems and applicable counter-countermeasure techniques. Starting as a junior engineer he, in turn, became a Group Leader, Branch Chief, Laboratory Chief, and then Director of the Development and Engineering Division at the Harry Diamond Laboratories. Before his retirement from government service in 1986 he also served as Acting Director of the Harry Diamond Laboratories for a period of approximately six months.
