Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A talented visual storyteller, Barbara Earl Thomas has drawn from history, literature, folklore, mythology, and biblical stories over her forty-year career to reflect the social fabric of our times. Thomas's figural and narrative imagery has a deeply philosophical and emotional force, and light and dark have been especially potent concepts in her work. This book of new works meditates on the visual experience of the body within a physical and metaphorical world of light and shadow. Based on real people, the portraits "elevate to the magnificent" her family, friends, and neighbors, as well as cultural icons of the African American literary landscape. Thomas's illumination of the human figure through her light-filled artworks and portraiture encourages the viewer to reflect on how we communicate ourselves to the world and how we perceive those among us.Exhibition dates: Chrysler Museum of Art: February 24-August 20, 2023; Wichita Art Museum: October 7, 2023-January 14, 2024; Arthur Ross Gallery, the University of Pennsylvania: February 17-May 21, 2024 Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Unpaginated, 26 fullpage color collages numbered in the captions and listed in a terminal index along with an extremely detailed vita, and a few more plates & lists besides (solo & group exhibitions, awards, selected reviews). Inscribed and signed on the titlepage, dated year of publication. Oversize hardbound in 14x10 inch colorplate boards, a perfectly sound, flat, clean, unmarked copy. Dee Dee's most complex plates are worthy of Jess, an earlier-generation collagist. And as absorbing as a "Where's Waldo" drawing. Her less complex work is also excellent. "Utopia" in the artist's mind is living in conditions of radical equality of gender, ethnicity, left politics and so forth (see accompanying essays).

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Out of Site explores the invisible landscapes of the American West through the interwoven forces of art and technology over the past 170 years. This interdisciplinary project features an array of visual media, including historical, modern, and contemporary photography, that punctuate a series of essays by art scholars alongside first-person perspectives from artists working in the field today. Beginning with the survey era, the publication mines the use of wet-plate photography to penetrate the visible surface of the land to visualize the geological processes, mineral resources, and human histories that formed the foundation of the American empire. With the turn of the century, the relationship between sight and site grew increasingly remote, revealing patterns of large-scale industrial transformation, including the rise of nuclear technology and the American military-industrial complex. And with the modern use of long-range drones, satellites, and other adapted photographic technologies in the postwar years, new matrices of power and surveillance are revealed alongside the human and environmental fallout they often leave behind.Contributors: William L. Fox, Mark Klett, Hillary Mushkin, Britt Salvesen, Kim Stringfellow, Jason Weems, and Will Wilson Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Determined to Be explores the work of prizewinning American sculptor John Walter Rhoden (1916-2001). When Rhoden was young, his talent caught the attention of several notable mentors: he was advised by Hale Woodruff and Alain Locke as well as sculptors Richmond Barth and William Zorach. He went on to travel the world and became the first Black visual artist to win the Prix de Rome from the American Academy in Rome. Contributing scholars explore various aspects of Rhoden's life and career, including how the artist was shaped by his hometown of Birmingham, Alabama, and his training and professional networks. Essays also consider how his time in Italy and his years in Indonesia expanded the scale and scope of his sculpture. Other topics include Rhoden's travels, public commissions, and oeuvre in the context of Cold War modernism, as well as media coverage of his career in the mainstream and Black press. Approximately 150 images, including stunning new photography, showcase the technical sophistication of Rhoden's work, and archival materials from the recently processed John Rhoden papers shed new light on the life of this significant underrecognized sculptor. Contributors: Greg Barnhisel, Katelyn D. Crawford, Sylvea Hollis, Hannah McCoy, Rebecca VanDiver, and Kelin Baldridge Smallwood Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. In this collection of essays, five previously published and three new in this volume, a western historian of Chinese art examines the received ideas of art history from the vantage point of another culture. On the premise that what we feel a need to explain and how we explain it alike depend on what we assume to be normal, the essays all adopt a comparative approach. Whatever body of material is taken as case study-Gothic churches, Egyptian reliefs, Chinese bronzes, Insular gospel manuscripts-the problems addressed are of broad general relevance to the discipline. They include the nature of art history's styles and periods, iconography as explanation, the rationale for art historical description, technical studies and the artistic imagination, and histories of representation. Clear and accessible, this book will interest anyone concerned with the conduct of art historical scholarship and the origins and consequences of its practices. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Photographically illustrated paper-covered boards; no dust jacket as issued. Sculptural works and drawings by Russell Crotty. Essay by David Frankel. Includes a biography, exhibition history and a bibliography. 64 pp., with two 2-page gatefolds and 108 four-color illustrations. 11-1/4 x 10-1/8 inches. Published on the occasion of exhibitions at CRG Gallery, New York, and Shoshana Wayne Gallery, Santa Monica, California. Near Fine (very slight bump to upper right corner, else Fine). From the publisher: "Russell Crotty's vast body of work expresses his fascination for astronomy and nature through the medium of drawing. Through his rigorous study of the stars and direct observations through the telescope, Crotty offers a romantic and poetic view of the universe while blurring the line between scientific research and artistic license. His idiosyncratic renderings in ballpoint pen began on flat paper and evolved into compilations of drawings in oversized books and on paper-coated spheres. He continues to push the boundaries of drawing by exploring new formats, including his most recent large-scale field charts. His work is shown around the world and is collected by many museums including The Museum of Modern Art and the Centre Pompidou. This monograph features installation shots, page layouts from Crotty's artist books, gatefolds and details.".

Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. Still life celebrates the commonplace. But in these simple objects we invest meaning-meaning that can be culturally specific but also universal. From the seventeenth century onward in Europe, a shared visual language developed around the practice of still life painting. In early nineteenth century America, artists adapted established formats to suit new circumstances. Drawing examples from three American and one French museum, this catalogue traces the development of American still life painting and its European precedents. American Enounters: The Simple Pleasures of Still Life is the final installment of the series, a collaborative project between Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Musee du Louvre, the High Museum of Art, and the Terra Foundation for American Art investigating four key genres in nineteenth century American art: landscape, genre, portraiture, and still life. "This book is part of a series published to accompany a sequence of four special installations co-organized by Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, the High Museum of Art, the Musaee du Louvre, and the Terra Foundation for American Art." Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. This iteration of the American Encounters series addresses artists conceptions of political and military authority through portraiture during and after North American and European revolutionary upheavals in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The works discussed demonstrate shifting ideals of leadership through examination of artistic style, from restrained Neoclassicism to dynamic Romanticism, as well as the iconography of martial and civilian power. The publication also explores the proliferation and replication of images of leaders, particularly George Washington, as well as the demand for the revolutionary hero and first presidents likeness in France. Catalogue essays elucidate the reasons for the transmission of portraits of Washington across the Atlantic in the context of artistic, political, and military exchange between the two countries. Contributions also delve into issues of colonial, post-colonial, and post-revolutionary identity, investigating the ability of artists to navigate oscillating national, social, and cultural boundaries. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Memories of Baku is the visual retelling of the rich history of the capital of Azerbaijan and the country's rise to power as one of the largest oil producing nations in the world. This publication showcases the unique socio-economic cultural and political situation of Baku in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, presented alongside aspects of Baku culture in the forms of architecture, music, theater and the visual arts. Embellished with photographs, advertisements and postcard views of the once-opulent city, Memories of Baku reaches beyond the classical stereotypes of Azerbaijan as "the land of fire," focusing instead on what are considered the more formative elements of Baku's community. The postcard illustrations included in this collection are derived from the personal collection of editor Nicolas V. Iljine, who has developed a passion for discovering and sharing these impressions of an antiquated city with the public. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Born in Sinaloa, Mexico, Julia Pastrana (18341860) was a gifted singer, musician and dancer who could converse in English, Spanish and French. She also suffered from one of the most extreme cases of hypertrichosis terminalis on record and severe gingival hyperplasia: her face and body were covered with thick hair and her jaw was disproportionately large. Pastrana toured North America and Europe billed as The Ugliest Woman in the World. After her death, her body was exhibited throughout Europe and the US. Until her recent repatriation to Sinaloa, her body was kept at the University of Oslo, Norway. Pastranas story raises issues around beauty, ownership, science and racism, human rights, colonialism, sexism and indigenous rights. Artist Laura Anderson Barbata has brought together scholars and experts from various fields to explore these and other topics as they relate to Pastranas extraordinary story. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. A deluxe, large-format publication of French poet Stephane Mallarmes most influential workAmong the most influential works of the French poet Stephane Mallarme (184298), Un Coup de des jamais n'abolira le Hasard feels to this day revolutionary and resoundingly contemporary, both for the suggestive power of its unconventional free verse and for its striking visual impact. For the poet, the white spaces, or scattered "silences," are as integral to the reading as the words on the page, and the very designthe typographical layers and the arrangement of lines and words upon the page and across spreadscarries meaning and content. At the time of his death in 1898, Mallarme was close to realizing his vision of a deluxe, large-format publication of the poem that would meet his precise specifications with regard to dimensions, typography and page design, and would include commissioned lithographs by his friend Odilon Redon, an artist he admired for the tonal richness and symbolic power of his images. This two-volume edition brings all of these elements together for the first time in an English-language edition. Separate French and English volumes allow for individual readings of the original poem and this fresh new translation (A Blow of Dice Never Will Abolish Chance), each produced at full scale, meticulously typeset and accompanied by Redon's evocative illustrations. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Larry Day (1921-1998) was a distinguished painter and a dominant force in American art from the 1950s through the 1990s. Referred to as "the dean of Philadelphia painters," he was a charismatic teacher to several generations of artists, many of whom are important figures in the arts today. This celebratory catalogue will explore his contributions to the art of his time, and the lasting power of his observations and imagination.Day's first successes were with abstracted views of nature, but he is perhaps best known for figurative portraits and architectural landscapes, which he continued to develop for the rest of his career. The driving force behind Day's paintings was an intense engagement with earlier art and a deep classicism that governed his views of human interactions and the built environment. In the last decades of his life, he made several series of haunting and mysterious figure com-positions that mix everyday scenes with earlier works of art, fully integrating past and present. Day's art tells us that life is deeply imbricated with the past, and that reality is not a matter of simple observation, but is made up of memories and experience of all kinds of images-from art, literature, film, television, and fashion magazines. This fully illustrated catalogue will focus on Day's working process and relationships between his paintings and drawings. It will include a selection of Day's writings along with scholarly articles that will affirm Day's singular place within midcentury American art and his equally important legacy. Referred to as "the dean of Philadelphia painters," Larry Day (1921-1998) was a dominant force in American art from the 1950s through the 1990s, as well as a dynamic teacher and mentory. Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The Unknown Blakelock offers new perspectives on Ralph A. Blakelock (1847-1919) by addressing the modernity of his accomplishments as reflected in the exhibition's paintings. A self-taught artist, Blakelock digressed from habitual procedures into stylistic experiments that were considerably in advance of common practice of the time. Associated primarily with the two dominant themes of moonlight views and Indian encampments, Blakelock was already acknowledged as a colorist during his career, an aspect of his painting attesting to his receptivity to modernist developments but largely overlooked in critical discourse. The works featured in this exhibition also attest to a salient characteristic of our own time, namely, the artist's growing autonomy. The Unknown Blakelock explores this ongoing impact of Blakelock's work, which has previously been placed in the context of the exploration of his own-not our-contemporaries.The Unknown Blakelock is a catalog of the exhibition of lesser-known works of Blakelock held at the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, from January 25 to August 24, 2008, and at the National Academy Museum and School of Fine Arts in New York City, from September 25, 2008, to January 4, 2009. Offers new perspectives on Ralph A. Blakelock (1847-1919) by addressing the modernity of his accomplishments. The works featured attest to a salient characteristic of our own time, namely, the artist's growing autonomy. The Unknown Blakelock explores this ongoing impact of Blakelock's work, which has previously been placed in the context of the exploration of his own contemporaries. Hardcover. Condition: new. Hardcover. Los Angeles painter Albert Contreras (born 1933) first won public acclaim in the early 1960s, with monochrome paintings featuring a central disc motif. By the early 1970s, with the dematerialization of art in the air, Contreras pursuit of extreme reduction led him to cease painting altogether, and he spent the next two decades driving garbage trucks and resurfacing roads for the City of Los Angeles. He returned to painting in 1997 (following an intensive period of psychotherapy), producing relatively small, square-ish canvases with thick, gridded swathes of bright colors and glitter, seemingly inspired by the aesthetics of cupcake bakeries, cosmetics counters and custom car shops--canvases that critic David Pagel describes as obscenely edible. This first substantial Contreras monograph surveys the painters recent and older works. Shipping may be from our UK warehouse or from our Australian or US warehouses, depending on stock availability.
