Le Corbusier, 1887-1965. The modulor: a harmonious measure to the human scale, universally applicable to architecture and mechanics. Translated by Peter de Francia and Anna Bostock. Cambridge, Mass: M.I.T. Press, 1971, second edition, second printing, August 1971, 243pp., square sewn PAPERBACK, cover price $3.45 and $3.95 on rear cover, worn but good used copy, crease marks on spine, falls open easily to several pages. The Modulor by Le Corbusier Translated by Peter de Francia and Anna Bostock Within the last quarter-century there has been a growing demand for a revised system of measurement, designed to meet the complexities of modern technology and capable of universal application. The French architect Le Corbusier, whose ideas revolutionized much of contemporary building and architectural theory, evolved such a system, which he set forth in The Modulor, first published in English in 1954. The Modulor does not claim to supersede the foot and inch or the meter. Rather it is a reconciliation of the two - a measuring tool based upon the proportions of the human body and on mathematics. Essentially practical, it is intended as an architectural reference, always on hand, to be applied to the problems of proportion, design, prefabrication, and mass production. Le Corbusier tells the story of this major invention, traces its development, points to its origins in the architecture of the past, and sets forth the mathematical and philosophical standpoints from which it springs, with illustrations of its practical application to several buildings. Upon the first appearance of the translation, Stamo Papadaki wrote in Progressive Architecture: ''In our present agonizing reappraisal of the realities of our planet, Modulor may fail to attract all the attention which it deserves. But the seeds for a future renaissance are here, this reunion of the practical and the sublime." Sibyl Moholy-Nagy reported in College Art Journal: ''His completely integrated powers of imagination and formulation are stunning - particularly if one keeps in mind that here is a translation - although an exceptionally able one and that the power of meaning and the beauty of imagery are unweakened by the transposition . Anyone accustomed to struggling with words is compelled to admire here a great writer, and anyone accustomed to struggling with the meaning of Le Corbusier's architecture suddenly feels a key of comprehension in his hand.".
