(Hardcover, 1957). (1957) 1957 reprint. Small 8vo (125 x 190mm). Pp239. Not illustrated. Black cloth, gilt dog motif to upper board, spine titled in gilt. Some browning and use. Good-plus in price-clipped dust-wrapper. The fourth title in a series of five mysteries to feature insurance investigator Montague Cork with his co-star for this novel, Honey the Mastiff. "When Mr Cork bent down to stroke Honey's ears he little guessed the trouble she would lead him into. Under the will of eccentric Colonel Jack Gilbert she had been bequeathed with the total income from his estate to a dogs' home, 'for her lifetime or for so long as she remained in the institution's care.' Subsequently the money was to revert to a penurious lot of nephews and nieces, all of whom had pressing reasons for wanting to see Honey swiftly out of the way. But in Mr Cork, whose company insured her, she found a champion. A little like a mastiff himself, the old insurance man and the dog, as game as a bare-knuckled fighter, defeated the conspiracy to get rid of her." .
