Book
Cloth, 8vo, 24 cm, xii, 353, [1] pp. From the introduction: "In this book I set out to trace the story of company men - and later company women - as social rather than economic beings. I try to depict them, not just as actors in company histories, nor as 'humanware' alongside software and hardware, but as individuals in the round who have always faced difficult and changing relationships with their employers, and between their offices and homes. I make much use of writers and outside observers who have provided insights and sidelights into human predicaments which have been too often ignored by management experts, and obscured by mechanical structures and attitudes. And I give special attention to the recurring tension between the human spirit and the machines which it has created: the thème which has kept returning in différent forms since the Industrial Revolution, and which has reached a new phase in the age of computers. In covering such a wide geographical canvas, I have not tried to provide a comprehensive history. I do not attempt to furnish an economie analysis, or to describe the development of unions, industrial disputes or strikes. I have concentrated on the changing character of middle-class company man, picking out the phases and episodes which seem most significant and enlightening, and providing close-ups of a few big companies which have provided models and fore-runners for others: including General Motors and IBM in America, Shell and ICI in Britain, and Toyota and Sony in Japan." An ex-library copy with a callnumber on the spine, library bookplate on the front pastedown endpaper (overstamped withdrawn), stamps on the title-page and verso of the title-page and on the final text page, agetoned at margins, otherwise near Very Good.

Cloth, 4to, 29 cm, 399 pp, profusely illustrated in colour. From the blurb - "Learn how to capture the brilliant colours of autumn leaves, the mood of a stormy sky, or the shimmer of dark reflections in water. Painting Nature in Watercolour provides 135 stimulating lessons in painting trees, skies and water to help you improve your landscape painting. Watercolour is the most exhilarating painting medium - it s immediate, fresh and versatile. This book offers you all the help you need to paint nature in all its variety and complexity. The basic watercolour techniques are explained, then the special effects that can add sparkle to your paintings are explored. Once you have a thorough understanding of all these watercolour techniques you can begin any of the 135 lessons that make up this book. Each lesson concentrates on a common problem that you are likely to encounter when you paint nature. Each problem is analysed and then a working procedure is outlined. You will find that many compositions can be interpreted in more than one way and you will come to understand how and why each painting is executed the way it is. The lessons explain all the steps in the painting process and many have step-by-step demonstrations that enable you to see how the painting evolved All landscape painters will find Painting Nature in Watercolour both practical and inspirational. By concentrating on key elements of a landscape - trees, skies and water - it offers both beginners and experienced artists the opportunity to develop their work and produce creative and successful landscape paintings." Cloth, 8vo, 25 cm, xiv, 398 pp, 37 ills, maps. From the blurb: "High above the 'Dancing Floor of Ares' on the remote northern slopes of Parnassus lies one of the most improbable and dangerous of all literary monuments - the cave of Edward John Trelawny - writer, adventurer, fantasist and chronicler of the Romantic circle of Shelley and Byron. Reached only by rusting iron ladders snaking up a vertical cliff, the cave has been a place of refuge since the time of Xerxes's invasion, but its presiding spirit is indisputably Trelawny's. It was in this mountain fortress that he lived out his Byronic fantasies during the Greek War of Independence as the companion of the bandit chief Odysseus; it was here he married his thirteen-year-old bride; it was here that he was shot twice in the back by two English assassins; and from here that he was eventually rescued in August 1825 by a retired English officer called Francis D'Arcy Bacon. Trelawny spent the first thirty years of his life preparing for his adventures in Greece and the last fifty living off them, and in the story of the assassination attempt can be found the key to English literature's most maverick personality. Lord Byron's Jackal is part biography, part an account of a brutal war, part a work of literary history. It is also a work of detection whose prize is the romantic imagination itself.David Crane's book draws on a wealth of archival material in Britain and Greece, and on contemporary diaries and memoirs.". fine hardcover fine jacket ". there are three Stephen Baxters, and any one of them would have to be counted among the most important British SF writers to emerge in the last decade . [the first, Baxter] has emerged as a master of cosmological hard SF . with Stapledon's sense of sublime immensities and Blish's ingenuity at working permutations on the question of what is human. A second, more Wellsian Baxter, wrote The Time Machine and Anti-Ace] . Finally, there's the Baxter who wants to be the Milton of a re-imagined space program in novels like last year's Voyage and the new Titan . His work, no matter how diverse, reflects an acute sense of the tone that defines the classic SF experience - what used to be called wonder, before we all got cool - and he embeds more of the history of SF in his work than almost any other young writer."- Locus, October 1997.

Laminated illustrated wrappers, 8vo, 304 pp, 16 colour plates and over 100 black-and-white ills. A Guide to the famous and much-collected "New Naturalists" series. From the blurb: "with this book, the Collins New Naturalist Library reaches its half- centenary. Many of the titles in the series have become natural history classics, and played an important part in shaping and informing a popular interest in British natural history and conservation. The idea for the series came from a belief that the latest scientific research, written by the leading experts in their field, would be welcomed by the lay reader so long as it was written and presented in an attractive way. This belief was vindicated when the first book, Butterflies by E. B. Ford, became an instant bestseller on its publication in 1945. The New Naturalists reveals for the first time the behind-the-bookshelf story of the New Naturalist Library: who the authors were and what they did; how each title was conceived and received; the much admired jackets; and the trials, tribulations and triumphs of what has been described as the most significant and long-running natural history series in the world. Above all, The New Naturalists is a celebration of a natural history golden age, when field naturalists and scientific ecologists were able to combine their skills to produce an era of discovery that will probably never be equalled."
