Prescient underlined text in the bio, describing Herrick's 1897 novellete, The Man Who Wins: "The theme of the spiritual agony suffered by the dedicated professional man who finds that his ideals are being destroyed by the morally corrupt forces of commercialism first appears in this story. . .making us aware of all the poisonous implications of man's slavery to business methods, of the ruin of both the body and spirit. . .He retained to the end of his life the conviction that progress occurred when individual men and women chose love, charity, and justice over self-aggrandizement. The cheap, quick, mechanical solutions of the "isms" were self-defeating because they ignored the need for individual reflection and moral decision.".
