Hardcover (Original Cloth). Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Dust Jacket. Illustrated (illustrator). First Edition. introduction by author, two appendices, notes to the text and index. Black-and-white illustrated frontispiece, showing a drawing of Contessa Teresa Guiccioli, done in 1818. The text is illustrated with seven contemporary illustrations or reproductions of letters. Light blue coloured cloth covered boards with gilt initials of Byron and Teresa embossed to the front panel and gilt coloured titles to the backstrip blue coloured tint to the top text block edge. The title says it all, but this book is more than just reproduction of letters to and fro between the two lovers, it is also a snapshot of life in the early part of the 19th century in Italy and of a Byron that is not necessarily well understood. The author has also included other letters written by Byron and Teresa two other friends and family to give a fuller overview of the lovers and their times. Softening of the backstrip edges and bumping of the book corners. Fading to the backstrip and to the outer edges of the book panels. Faint foxing can be seen to the backstrip which is also present to the textblock edges and endpapers. Light browning of the textblock edges and pages with previous owner's name to the free front end paper. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
