Cloth, 4to, 30 cm, 148 pp. 20 colour plates, 55 monochrome plates, 13 text ills. From the blurb: "[Constable's] work in watercolour or oil, whether as sketch or finished Academy painting, is at the highest international level. He can lay claim to be a forerunner of the Impressionists. The attraction of Constable as a subject for study is strong because he would never have made this "immodest" claim: the work was the man and he was both simple and humble. Mr Peacock has divided his book into three parts: The Man and His Work; The Romantic Vision; and there is a section on Constable's pictures of Ships and the Sea. The illustrations in Mr Peacock's book, generous in number, are wide-ranging. In addition to pictures from public galleries he has been privileged to select examples not hitherto reproduced from private collections both here and abroad. They include numerous subjects in colour. There is also a large number of monochrome plates, and sketches and more informal pieces from sketchbooks." Very Good in Near Very Good dustwrapper.

Some edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners slightly rubbed, rubbed area to 'horse's rump' on back jacket, not price clipped (£1.80), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 176pp, illustrated. S. G. Wildman, a Cheshire schoolmaster and antiquarian, contends that the 'Black Horse' pub name could be symbolic of battle wins for the Celtic - Romano Brits against the Anglo Saxons in the 500s. Why 'Black Horse'? Because the British (Arthurian) defenders were cavalry, as opposed to Saxon infantry, and there is evidence, from several sources, that the horses that were used were black fell ponies from the Lake District. A strange but interesting book.
