208 x 150 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. 110, incl. index; tables; maps; photographs. Wrappers partially discoloured and a little creased; trace of gum residue to head of spine. Good. "This book, written by a South African doctor now living in exile, shows how the ill-health of South Africa's 25.4 million black majority derives from the apartheid system itself. Poor wages and harsh working conditions; the lack of services, overcrowding and stress of life in the black townships; the destruction of personal relationships through the pass laws and the regime's programme of mass forced removals to the barren 'homelands' - all combine to drain the physical and mental energies of black South Africans. Above all, the violence inherent in apartheid itself, dependent as the regime is on military force for its survival, poses an insidious threat to life and health.".

Book
Soft Covers. Condition: VG. No Jacket. Map (illustrator). Reprint. First published in 1964 this account of early organised resistance against South Africa's apartheid system, focuses on events in the Transkei where protest against Government policies developed into rebellion in the late 1950s/early '60s. A detailed history of white imposed rule over the native people of South Africa is presented by the author, to background the reasons for dissent. At the time this second edition was published, in 1984, Govan Mbeki (1910-2001) had already served 20 years of a life sentence on Robben Island but, although isolated from his followers he remained, like Mandala, a leader in absence. An interesting and informative study of be the beginning of the end for apartheid. Reprint, 159 pages, including four appendices, map. Pictorial card covers VG with crease across top front corner, light wear spine extremities, stamp of the "NZ Defence Aid Fund For Southern Africa" lower title page, no other markings/inscriptions, text block excellent.

210 x 148 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. 702, incl. index. Sunned on spine and very slightly rubbed; trace of browning. Good to very good condition. "The intensification of the liberation struggle in South Africa has led to a renewed demand for this book. As a critical analysis of the Labour and National Movements in South Africa it is a classic study incorporating much material drawn from primary hitherto untapped sources. While it has become essential reading for those engaged in the struggle for South African liberation, it is also an invaluable textbook for students of race relations, colonial nationalism, the class theory and South African history. This reprint by IDAF takes the place of the original edition published by Penguin African Library in 1969.".
