Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Is the involuntary commitment of the mentally ill morally proper How can we determine proper psychiatric care in a managed health care system And can a mental health professional violate patient's confidentiality when they believe a patient is a threat to someone In six non-ideological essays, leading bioethicists, including one with practical experience in medical administration, search for clear moral and legal guidelines for dealing with the complex issues presented when treating mentally ill patients. Objective and readily understandable, Mental Illness and Public Health Care illuminates for the educated reader some of the key ethical issues facing mental health care professionals and provides convincing practical conclusions with real moral import. Is the involuntary commitment of the mentally ill morally proper How can we determine proper psychiatric care in a managed health care system And can a mental health professional violate a patient's confidentiality when they believe that patient is a threat to someone These are the ethical, legal, and medical questions at the heart of the nineteenth annual volume of Biomedical Ethics Reviews, Mental Illness and Public Health Care. In six nonideological essays, leading bioethicists, including one with practical experience in medical administration, search for clear moral and legal guidelines for dealing with the complex issues presented when treating mentally ill patients. Regarding involuntary commitment, Theodore Benditt and Gerard Elfstrom take radically different approaches, but come to quite similar conclusions against the practice. David Malloy, Thomas Hadjistravopoulos, and Wade Robison all stress the need to incorporate ethical values into the operation of managed health care systems in order to ensure that patients will receive the most beneficial treatment. Mark Meaney confirms this approach with an actual case of a public sector managed behavioral health care corporation using the services of an ethics center to implement a system-wide corporate ethics program. Finally, Pam Sailors examines the deficiencies of, and proposes modifications to, the so-called Tarasoff laws requiring psychotherapists to break patient confidentiality under certain circumstances. Objective and readily understandable, Mental Illness and Public Health Care illuminates for the educated reader some of the key ethical issues facing mental health care professionals and provides convincing practical conclusions with real moral import. 160 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -As a field of study only thirty-five years old, bioethics has often lacked recognizable definition about what it is, what it does, what its value may be, and how one prepares to engage the discipline. In The Nature and Prospect of Bioethics: Interdisciplinary Perspectives, prominent bioethicists, whose work is rooted in philosophy, religion, medicine, nursing, literature, history, and policy analysis, join together to discuss their methods and professional insights, as well as to better define the field and its future development. Writing from the perspective of their own specialties, the authors review how their personal disciplines have contributed to bioethics, debate the current and future bioethical issues they face, and identify the most significant strengths and weaknesses in the current practice of bioethics. Seeking a sound foundation for the discipline, they also consider what basic knowledge and skills are necessary to be competent in bioethics, what methods and theoretical approaches are most promising for its future development, and what issues or perspectives have been neglected. A focal point for each author is to discuss the impact of bioethics on the health care delivery system in general, as well as on the author's particular field of study. Diverse and forward-looking, The Nature and Prospect of Bioethics: Interdisciplinary Perspectives offers students and active bioethicists alike a readily accessible, interdisciplinary survey of the field, clearly establishing what bioethics is, why it is important, what precisely bioethicists do, how they prepare for work in the area, and what the field's developing prospects may be. The book constitutes an indispensable guide for all interested in bioethical issues today. 220 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Physician-Assisted Death is the eleventh volume of Biomedical Ethics Reviews. We, the editors, are pleased with the response to the series over the years and, as a result, are happy to continue into a second decade with the same general purpose and zeal. As in the past, contributors to projected volumes have been asked to summarize the nature of the literature, the prevailing attitudes and arguments, and then to advance the discussion in some way by staking out and arguing forcefully for some basic position on the topic targeted for discussion. For the present volume on Physician-Assisted Death, we felt it wise to enlist the services of a guest editor, Dr. Gregg A. Kasting, a practicing physician with extensive clinical knowledge of the various problems and issues encountered in discussing physician assisted death. Dr. Kasting is also our student and just completing a graduate degree in philosophy with a specialty in biomedical ethics here at Georgia State University. Apart from a keen interest in the topic, Dr. Kasting has published good work in the area and has, in our opinion, done an excellent job in taking on the lion's share of editing this well-balanced and probing set of essays. We hope you will agree that this volume significantly advances the level of discussion on physician-assisted euthanasia. Incidentally, we wish to note that the essays in this volume were all finished and committed to press by January 1993. 168 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The primary objective of The Health Care Ethics Con sultant is to focus attention on an immediate practical problem: the role and responsibilities, the education and training, and the certification and accreditation of health care ethics consultants. The principal questions addressed in this book include: Who should be considered health care ethics consultants Whom should they advise What should be their responsi bilities and what kind of training should they have Should there be some kind of accreditation or certification program to ensure that those who call themselves ethics consultants are in fact qualified to advise, consult, research, and write in health care ethics The distinguished authors ofthese articles are persons with diverse backgrounds, interests, presumptions, and val ues. Not surprisingly, therefore, diverse responses have emerged to the questions posed. Though the book's chapters are individually authored, they are informed by the group discussions that went on during active workshop sessions, and by knowledge of the contributions of others. All of the chapters meaningfully represent their consensus. This is not to say that there were no disagreements regarding specific details, but rather that there were no fundamental objections on the book's basic content among a panel of authors who share basic premises regarding the role, responsibilities, education, and certifica tion of health care ethics consultants. 224 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In 1995, Signal Transduction Protocols, edited by David A. Kendall and Stephen J. Hill, was published in the Methods in Molecular Biology series. This second edition represents an update to that previous work with an emp- sis on new methodologies that have developed in the last few years. The goal, then and now, is to provide procedures written by experts with first-hand ex- rience in a detail that goes far beyond what is generally encountered in the 'methods' section of most journals and thus actually permits a particular p- cedure to be replicated. In addition, we have had as a secondary goal the id- tification of protocols for the assay of general classes of signal transduction components that, ideally, can be adapted to the assay of any member of that class. The ability to do this has resulted in large part from the use of affini- based assays, the ease with which specific proteins can be specifically tagged, and an explosion in the availability of highly specific antibodies from comm- cial sources, especially antibodies raised against signaling proteins of human origin. The number of available approaches is, fortunately for those working in signaling research, far too great to fit within the confines of this volume, so hard choices as to what to include had to be made. 340 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The Right Book at the Right Time The poxviruses comprise a family of complex DNA viruses that replicate in the cytoplasm of vertebrate or invertebrate cells. Of the eight recognized g- era of vertebrate poxviruses, those belonging to the orthopoxvirus genus have been most intensively studied. This group includes variola virus, the agent of smallpox, as well as cowpox virus and vaccinia virus. Jenner's original sma- pox vaccine, described in 1798, consisted of live cowpox virus, but vaccinia virus later replaced it (1). There has been speculation as to the origin of v- cinia virus; the most likely idea is that it is a separate species, possibly ori- nally isolated from a horse, and is now extinct or rare in nature (2). Recent genome sequencing studies confirm the distinctness of variola virus, cowpox virus, and vaccinia virus and also their very close genetic relationship, which accounts for the cross protection of smallpox vaccines. The novelty of the smallpox vaccine can be readily appreciated by the time it took, about 80 years, before the next live vaccine against rabies was developed, and another 50 years for the yellow fever vaccine. Moreover, the eradication of smallpox in 1977 stands as a unique medical achievement. Because of its historical role, sma- pox vaccination contributed greatly to present concepts of infectious disease, immunity, and pathogenesis. Less well known, however, are the many other 'firsts' for vaccinia virus. 416 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Recombinant Proteins from Plants is one of the most exciting and fastest developing areas in biology. The latest molecular techniques are being applied to the exploitation of plants as novel expression systems for the p- duction and overproduction of heterologous and native proteins. Transgenic plant technology is currently used in three broad areas: the expression of - combinant proteins to improve crop quality by increasing disease/pest res- tance or increasing tolerance to stress, optimizing plant productivity and yield by the genetic manipulation of metabolic pathways, and the large-scale co- effective production of recombinant proteins for use as specialist industrial or therapeutic biomolecules. The intention of Recombinant Proteins from Plants is to provide c- prehensive and detailed protocols covering all the latest molecular approaches. Because the production oftransgenic plants has become routine in many la- ratories, coverage is also given to some of the more 'classical' approaches to the separation, analysis, and characterization of recombinant proteins. The book also includes areas of research that we believe will become increasingly important in the near future: efficient transformation of monocots with Agrobacterium optimizing the stability of recombinant proteins, and a section highlighting the immunotherapeutic potential of plant-expressed proteins. 324 pp. Englisch.

This divalent metal ion can bind to a large number of proteins; by doing so it modifies their biological activity or their stability. Because of its distinct che- cal properties calcium is uniquely suited to act as an on-off switch or as a light dimmer of biological activities. The two books entitled Calcium-Binding Protein Protocols (Volumes I and II) focus on modern experimental analyses and methodologies for the study of calcium-binding proteins. Both extracel- lar and intracellular calcium-binding proteins are discussed in detail. H- ever, proteins involved in calcium handling (e. g. , calcium pumps and calcium channels), fall outside of the scope of these two volumes. Also, calcium-bi- ing proteins involved in bone deposition will not be discussed, as this specific topic has been addressed previously. The focus of these two books is on studies of the calcium-binding proteins and their behavior in vitro and in vivo. The primary emphasis is on protein chemistry and biophysical methods. Many of the methods described will also be applicable to proteins that do not bind calcium. Calcium-Binding Protein Protocols is divided into three main sections. The section entitled Introduction and Reviews provides information on the role of calcium in intracellular secondary messenger activation mechanisms. Mo- over, unique aspects of calcium chemistry and the utilization of calcium in dairy proteins, as well as calcium-binding proteins involved in blood clotting, are addressed. 356 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Could there be a better time to be a life scientist In the past two decades, a host of new techniques have been added to the tool chests of biochemists and molecular biologists. A wonderful benefit of the basic scientific research that fueled the advances in these fields is the wide variety of direct applications in agriculture and medicine. Even with all of these advances, and with the accompanying explosion in computer and information technology, it is clear that the depth of our ignorance vastly exceeds the breadth of our knowledge about complex organisms at the molecular level. Any new techniques or materials that allow us to extend our research-based knowledge should be w- comed and utilized to their fullest potentials. With the cloning of the green fluorescent protein (GFP) from Aequorea victoria in 1992, another valuable tool was added to the arsenal. In Green Fluorescent Proteins: Applications and Protocols examples of how GFP can be utilized in a variety of fields are presented. Although the text has chapters that emphasize different areas of s- cialization, it is not meant to send molecular biologists to one section, botanists to another, and clinicians to still another. Perhaps the most valuable exchange for people in any discipline will come from seeing how others have been able to apply GFP in fields outside of their immediate areas of expertise. GFP from Aequorea victoria is a fluorescent marker protein, and there are certainly other useful fluorophore markers. 408 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The process whereby a single cell, the fertilized egg, develops into an adult has fascinated for centuries. Great progress in understanding that process, h- ever, has been made in the last two decades, when the techniques of molecular biology have become available to developmental biologists. By applying these techniques, the exact nature of many of the interactions responsible for forming the body pattern are now being revealed in detail. Such studies are a large, and it seems ever-expanding, part of most life-science groups. It is at newcomers to this field that this book is primarily aimed. A number of different plants and animals serve as common model org- isms for developmental studies. In Molecular Methods in Developmental Bi- ogy: Xenopus and Zebrafish, a range of the molecular methods applicable to two of these organisms are described, these are the South African clawed frog, Xenopus laevis, and the zebrafish, Brachydanio rerio. The embryos of both of these species develop rapidly and externally, making them particularly suited to investigations of early vertebrate development. However, both Xenopus and zebrafish have their own advantages and disadvantages. Xenopus have large, robust embryos that can be manipulated surgically with ease, but their pseudotetraploidy and long generation time make them unsuitable candidates for genetics. This disadvantage may soon be overcome by using the diploid Xenopus tropicalis, and early experiments are already underway. The transp- ent embryos of zebrafish render them well-suited for in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry, and good for observing mutations in genetic screens. 232 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The previous edition of Transmembrane Signaling Protocols was published in 1998. Since then the human genome has been completely sequenced and new methods have been developed for the use of microarrays and proteomics to analyze global changes in gene expression and protein profiles. These advances have increased our ability to understand transmembrane signaling processes in much greater detail. They have also simultaneously enhanced our ability to determine the role of a large number of newly identified molecules in signaling events. In addition, novel video microscopy methods have been developed to image transmembrane signaling events in live cells in real time. In view of these major advances, it is time to update the previous edition. Because of the success of that volume, we have chosen to keep the essential character of the book intact. Introductory chapters from experts have been included to provide overall perspective and an overview of recent advances in signal transduction pathways. The individual chapters now include comp- hensive detailed methods, studies in genetically tractable systems, fluorescence microscopy in live single cells, ex vivo analysis of primary cells from tra- genic mice, as well as genomic and proteomic approaches to the analysis of transmembrane signaling events. We would like to express our deep gratitude to the coauthors of this publi- tion. We hope that Transmembrane Signaling Protocols, Second Edition will serve as a valuable resource for future progress in the study of signal transd- tion pathways. 376 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Leading biostatisticians and biomedical researchers describe many of the key techniques used to solve commonly occurring data analytic problems in molecular biology, and demonstrate how these methods can be used in the development of new markers for exposure to a risk factor or for disease outcomes. Major areas of application include microarray analysis, proteomic studies, image quantitation, genetic susceptibility and association, evaluation of new biomarkers, and power analysis and sample size. The use of biostatistical techniques in molecular biology has grown tremendously in recent years and is now essential for the correct interpretation of a wide variety of laboratory studies. In Biostatistical Methods, a panel of leading biostatisticians and biomedical researchers describe all the key techniques used to solve commonly occurring analytical problems in molecular biology, and demonstrate how these methods can identify new markers for exposure to a risk factor, or for determining disease outcomes. Major areas of application include microarray analysis, proteomic studies, image quantitation, determining new disease biomarkers, and designing studies with adequate levels of statistical power. In the case of genetic effects in human populations, the authors describe sophisticated statistical methods to control the overall false-positive rate when many statistical tests are used in linking particular alleles to the occurrence of disease. Other methods discussed are those used to validate statistical approaches for analyzing the E-D association, to study the associations between disease and the inheritance of particular genetic variants, and to examine real data sets. There are also useful recommendations for statistical and data management software (JAVA, Oracle, S-Plus, STATA, and SAS) . Accessible, state-of-the-art, and highly practical, Biostatistical Methods provides an excellent starting point both for statisticians just beginning work on problems in molecular biology, and for all molecular biologists who want to use biostatistics in genetics research designed to uncover the causes and treatments of disease. 228 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -As the major task of sequencing the human genome is near completion and full complement of human genes are catalogued, attention will be focused on the ultimate goal: to understand the normal biological functions of these genes, and how alterations lead to disease states. In this task there is a severe limitation in working with human material, but the mouse has been adopted as the favored animal model because of the available genetic resources and the highly conserved gene conservation linkage organization. In just of ten years since the first gene-targeting experiments were p- formed in embryonic stem (ES) cells and mutations transmitted through the mouse germline, more than a thousand mouse strains have been created. These achievements have been made possible by pioneering work that showed that ES cells derived from preimplantation mouse embryos could be cultured for prolonged periods without differentiation in culture, and that homologous rec- bination between targeting constructs and endogenous DNA occurred at a f- quency sufficient for recombinants to be isolated. In the next few years the mouse genome will be systematically altered, and the techniques for achi- ing manipulations are constantly being streamlined and improved. 444 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condition: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Soon after the first description of monoclonal antibodies in 1976, there was enormous interest in the clinical application of antibodies, especially in the context of cancer. Antibodies appeared to offer the 'magic bullet' that would allow the specific destruction of neoplastic cells. H- ever, many years' effort resulted in very few cases of successful immu- therapy with antibodies. As a result there was a major backlash against antibody therapy, and the field lost a considerable amount of popularity. Fashion, in science as well as in other things, tends to be cyclical. Antibody-based therapy is once again attracting scientists and clinicians. There are several reasons for the renewed optimism; certainly the expe- ence of the last two decades has provided a wealth of information about problems associated with antibody therapy, and possible solutions to these problems. Recombinant antibody engineering has rejuvenated the field, allowing both the modification of antibodies to improve their in vivo pr- erties and the isolation of novel antibody molecules by such techniques as phage display. The results of recent clinical trials have demonstrated unequivocally the benefit of antibody therapy in a number of settings, and, finally, more careful consideration has been taken of the types of disease best treated using this approach. 492 pp. Englisch.
