In this concise, yet lucid, account of medical history, Professor Vryonis offers a fascinating survey of the achievements (and shortcomings) of ancient medical schools -Egyptian, Hippocratic, Galenic, etc.-, and of the adoption and standardisation of ancient doctrines in Byzantine and Arab medical centres, until their introduction by way of Arab Africa and Spain into medieval Europe, and by way of Italy into Renaissance Europe, and their eventual replacement by modern scientific observation and practice.

Original half cloth. Condition: Sehr gut. 206 p. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - Allover very good and clean. - Contents: Prologue -- Introduction -- I. The Function of Poetry -- II. The Audience of Tragedy -- III. The Pleasure of Learning -- IV. The Function and Significance of Music in Tragedy -- V. The Proper Pleasure of Tragedy -- VI. Passion and Reason -- VII. The Ergon of Tragedy: A Recapitulation. - This is a study of the significance and social function of Tragic poetry as understood and explained by Aristotle in his treatise "On the Art of Poetry". Like other works of the philosopher, the "Poetics" is at the same time descriptive and prescriptive, historical and theoretical: it deals with an art created and practised almost exclusively in Athens in the fifth and earlier centuries, although it was adopted by other Greeks in the second part of the fourth century, and later spread, alongside the Greek language, all over the Hellenistic world to become the mark of hellenic culture in the centuries following the death of Aristotle and Alexander the Great. In the "Poetics", Aristotle does not discuss the performance of Drama as such. However, he considers music as a means of imitation - specifically, imitation of ethical qualities - which enhanced the signification of language in performance. He also puts forward a theory of reception of Tragic poetry with regard to what he calls its "proper pleasure", which results from specific types of plot, representing terrible and pitiful events, and brings about in the end "a catharsis of such emotions". This elliptic statement is discussed in a central chapter with reference to the main theories of its interpretation: medical, ethical, and cognitive. A comprehensive new reading is proposed which combines all references to catharsis in Aristotelian texts with his teaching about the function of the emotions. For Aristotle, emotions are directly relevant to moral excellence, and also contribute to cognition and decision making. His views about the emotions are seen to be confirmed by contemporary neural science. - G. M. Sifakis is Alexander S. Onassis Professor of Classical Greek Literature at New York University, and Director of Research at the Foundation for Research and Technology - Hellas. Papers presented at an international conference on the topic "The successors of Theocritus and Virgil : the reception of Bucolic poetry in ancient and modern times," organized by the Univ. of Crete, Dept. of Philology, held in Rethymnon May 22-23, 2006--Cf. preface. The essays collected in Pastoral Palimpsests examine nine instances in the reception of Theocritus and Virgil. They cover a 2000-year time span and a variety of topics: the literary and metaliterary importance of rustic pride in the pseudo-Theocritean Idyll 20 (Marco Fantuzzi); the linguistic significance of a bucolic locus amoenus contained in the Life of Aesop (Richard Hunter); the position of the piscatory eclogues in Jacopo Sannazaro s poetic career (Thomas Hubbard); the imitation of the Virgilian career in John Milton s Epitaphium Damonis (Philip Hardie); William Wordsworth s complex and carefully concealed Virgilianism (Annabel Patterson); Thomas Hardy s remarkable debt to Virgil s Eclogues and the Aeneid (Michael Paschalis); responses to Virgil s Eclogue 1 in twentieth-century literature (Theodore Ziolkowski); the haunting presence of the Virgilian Eclogues in Michel Butor s Mobile (Fiona Cox); and the aesthetics of pastoral melancholy in Virgil, Miklos Radnoti, and Bob Dylan (Richard F. Thomas).
