First Edition
4to, pp. 12; in modern marbled wrappers. First edition with the new preface: this poem was originally published in 1749, when Thornton was 25. The preface (as advertised on the title page) concerns the odd instruments featured in the ode itself: it is dated 30 May 1763. Just six days earlier, on 24 May, Thornton had been paid a visit by James Boswell, who had been flattered by a review of the letters he had published in the Public Advertiser: Boswell found him 'a well-bred, agreeable man, lively and odd'. Much more exciting from Boswell's point of view was the company: 'In a little, Mr Wilkes came in, to whom I was introduced, as I also was to Mr. Churchill. Wilkes is a lively, facetious man, Churchill a rough, blunt fellow, very clever. Lloyd too was there, so that I was got into the middle of the London Geniuses. They were high-spirited and boisterous, but were very civil to me, and Wilkes said he would be glad to see me in George Street' (Boswell's London Journal 1762-3, p. 266). The poem was actually published to coincide with a performance at Ranelagh on 10 June; and in the intervening time Boswell saw Thornton again at least once (on 1 June) and the Ode was the talk of literary London - Johnson himself repeated some of it to Boswell, 'which he said had humour', although he did not think much of Thornton's periodical The Connoisseur. This new edition is scarcer than the 1749 edition being recorded by ESTC online in only eight copies (BL, Trinity Cambridge and Rylands in the UK; Cornell, Duke, Harvard and Huntington in the US; and Turnbull in New Zealand).
