The principal research questions in the book are related to the role of vowel duration and vowel quality as possible cues of stressedness. Data of fundamental frequency are used to establish the effect of higher level prosodic units upon the manifestations of word stress. The analysis is based on the materials of Central Moksha dialects (the prototype of the literary language) recorded in four localities of the Atyuryevo, Kovylkino, Krasnoslobodsk, and Temnikov regions. The description of the framework of the present experimental investigation and of its results is preceded by an overview of the earlier findings concerning the segmental structure and the prosody of Moksha. Several appendices provided in this book contain a map of the Moksha dialects, a list of test words, and sets of additional data obtained in the acoustic analyses.

This study takes another approach, though, and discusses spatial variation in Saami from the point of view of lexicon. The point of departure is the assumption that when the share of common lexemes decreases between two localities, the difficulties in understanding increase. From this point of view, a simple measure of the communicative relation between two localities is the size of the shared vocabulary, and it is just such a comparison of vocabularies that is undertaken in Words and Varieties. Based on the material for Atlas Linguarum Europae (ALE), the investigation analyses lexical variation in Saami by means of dialectometrical methods.

This volume takes a new look at the Moldavian Csángós, an enigmatic group of people whose very existence as a group has been debated since the 19th century. The Csángós form a historical minority consisting of Roman Catholics that speak a Hungarian vernacular and live in an Orthodox region of Moldavia in North-East Romania. The articles in this volume include new perspectives on qualitative research of minority groups through the presentation of in-depth research on Csángós based on extensive fieldwork and firsthand accounts of contemporary conditions.

According to the received view, there are about a dozen non-finites in North Saami, but the morphosyntax and semantics of these have not yet been investigated thoroughly. In the present study, these verb forms are re-evaluated from the functional-typological perspectives of general linguistics: they are further classified into the subcategories of infinitives, participles, converbs and action nominals.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 148 pages ; 26 cm. Manuscripta Castreniana, II, Realia, ISSN 2489-4397; Ethnographica 1. Matthias Alexander Castrén (1813-1852) was by far the most significant Finnish linguist of the 19th century. In addition to being a linguist he was also a multidisciplinary scholar, equally versatile in the fields of ethnography folklore, mythology, archaeology, history and human geography. He left behind a huge corpus of field data collected by himself during prolonged expeditions to Karelia, Lapland, Arctic Russia, and Siberia between 1838 and 1849. In the short periods of time Castrén spent in an academic environment, he had little opportunity to synthesize his collections, a situation aggravated by his rapidly progressing and ultimately fatal illness. Therefore, a major part of his scholarly heritage remained unpublished when he died.

Hardcover. Condition: New. 821 pages, [28] pages of plates : illustrations, [1] folded map ; 29 cm. One hundred years ago, the Finnish military and political leader Gustaf Mannerheim, as an officer in the Russian army, made a legendary reconnaissance and research expedition across Asia to Peking. The goal of the expedition was, in addition to conducting ethnographic and natural science research, to map marching routes from Russia to China, as well as to collect military intelligence about China. Mannerheim kept a diary of the journey and described in detail his observations of geography, culture, economy and politics, as well as the difficulties of the expedition and his own disappointments.

This Sammelband includes Jarring's translation, with the original text, of the fascinating poem "The Contest of the Fruits", a 19th-century satire in which various fruits outdo each other with boasts and rebuttal. Four works bound in a single volume, octavo (228 x 153 mm). Mid-century blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Illustrations in text. Cloth bright, contents clean with hint of toning, skinning on end leaves of first work where disbound from original wrappers, small closed tears at gutter of first 4 leaves of second work, text unaffected, faint tidemarks in lower margin of final work.
