Soft Covers. Condition: VG. No Jacket. Photos, Map (illustrator). 1st. After flying as flight engineer/second pilot on operations with Bomber Command in No 75 (NZ) Squadron in the final months of WWII, Britsh born Brian Waugh and his wife Jean , plus their young family, came to NZ in the mid-1950s. By then he had already flown as a commercial pilot for several years in the UK, but this is where his story really "takes-off." For many years he flew with small regional airlines on the rugged, mountinous, windswept and often rain and cloud-bound West Coast of the South Island, an area that was well serviced by these operators, who not only had to battle the conditions, but also a restrictive Government monopoloy over civil passenger carrying companies. All these factors are discussed with honesty, strengtht, character and conviction by the author. (His son Richard, who edited this book, is probably NZ's most prolific aviation historian of recent times.) This copy is signed on the title page by Jean Waugh, who features frequently in the text. First edition of 1991, 229 pages including three appendices and index, b/w photos throughout, map. Colour pictorial card covers are VG with light crease lower front corner, text block is excellent.

Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Clean copy. What is it about this event that inspires so many to drive their bodies to the absolute limit? Everybody wonders how far they could push themselves if they really tried, and in Conquering the Coast to Coast Kelly Barber tells the story of how he found out just where his limits really lay. Having decided that he needed some adventure in his life, Kelly trained for months to transform himself from an out-of-shape average joe into an athlete capable of taking on the race's gruelling triathlon of cycling, running and kayaking. Going from the west to east coasts of the South Island, he raced through 243 kilometres of some of New Zealand's most beautiful and difficult terrain. He discovered a great deal about himself in the process and that he was capable of far more than he had ever imagined. Whether you have participated in this physically and mentally demanding event, dreamt of attempting it, or have tried desperately to understand why someone you know would put themselves through it, Kelly's story will take you on an amazing armchair journey of discovery. Packed with tips and advice on how to effectively train for the Coast to Coast, this book is a must-read for anyone who loves adventure.
