Signed by the Author. Octavo, navy blue cloth (hardcover), gilt letters, [viii] + 259 pp. Folding map at rear. Fine in a Fine, mylar protected dust jacket. From dust jacket: Military operations in Virginia between Gettysburg and the Wilderness have received scant attention by historians. Perhaps it is because the scale of campaigning in this period is modest when compared with the gigantic battles immediately preceding and following this phase of the Civil War in the East. Over one hundred thousand men, Union and Confederate, particpated in the Bristoe Station Campaign. This exceeded the numbers involved in the famed First Manassas Campaign, fought in 1861 when the war was young. In 1883 Andrew A. Humphreys, chief of staff of the Army of the Potomac during the Bristoe Campaign and a good historian, wrote a thin volume, From Gettysburg to the Rapidan. Sections on the Bristoe Campaign have appeared in books devoted to broader subjects. This volume is submitted as a specialized study devoted to filling a gap in Civil War scholarship. A study of military operations in Virginia immediately after the harrowing Gettysburg Campaign has its special advantages. One sees both nations exhibiting signs of exhaustion. The issues faced by the victorious North are merely less serious than those faced by the Confederacy. Both sides faced a horse and fodder shortage, morale problems (particularly within enlisted ranks), and a deficiency of able and experienced officers of higher rank. Moreover, the future status of the war in Virginia and the best way to conduct it came under examination in Washington and Richmond. New situations arose. Lee now led an army while in impaired health. Longstreet's Corps was absent from Vriginia. The manpower shortage forced the Confederacy to shun another Gettysburg-like offensive battle designed to push MEade out of northern Virginia. Flanking maneuvers, a repetition of the Second Manassas Campaign, might work. To insure success these maneuvers required great mobility and an exceedingly aggressive officer like Stonewall Jackson in immediate charge. Did Lee still have that class of an officer? The Bristoe Campaign also brought out the strengths and weaknesses, individually of Lee and Meade as commanders, and, collectively, of their armies. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: About Very Good. First Edition. (8), 220 pages. The result of 7 years of research, this book is a thorough examination of street names in the city of Lynchburg, Virginia. Craddock used official records, interviews, family histories, biographies of Lynchburg residents, and books in the "broader field of American place names" to produce this exhaustive and interesting study. The book is in almost as-new condition: clean, bright, and tight, with a hint of toning of pages. The scarce dust jacket has some very minor staining, but is still attractive and now protected in a clear mylar sleeve. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Book.
