Condition: Gut. Flaking paintwork. A shop selling postcards as old as the district. The heart of Paris. The chimes sound as you open the door. Dirn light, a musty smell. Everywhere, even on the counter, there are crates, files, albums, labelled bt)xes containing tightly packed rows of pictures, tons of them, the candid archives of a time lang Aast. Posters brighten one wall, columns of newspapers and magazines hold up the ceiling. You Slip into a Labyrinth of yellowed documents. Here, a wad of banknotes from the Revolution. There, behind a box of rationing coupons and other relics from the war, autographs, portraits of actors a dedicated Photograph of Maurice Chevalier. The shop also sells but you have to ask photographs of nudes. The owner is fifty, sixty years old. A lifetime spent subsisting on paper seasoned with dust. He Looks you up and down before taking out from behind his desk a shoe box,-then another, this one with a rubber band around it. This one contains , special, Photos. Then he asks the question, both suspicious and indifferent. Are you a connoisseur? Most of them are small-format snapshots, some are just contact shects. Faded, damaged, sometimes dog-eared, they show bodies, undraped, spread out, intertwined. You think they show all the possible positions, but there is not a vast range of variations, the same combinations are repeated. But the connoisseur is looking for something else. He is looking for details, discordant details: a peculiar physical feature, unusual costumes or settings, the expression of a genuine sentiment, overabundant Imagination, excess, the smallest curiosity which he will perhaps,be alone in noticing, but which delights him, which for him suddenly opens the doorbto a world of wonders. 13 neuwertig, sehr gut erhalten Gern können sie Ihr Buch per Rechnung bestellen. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Soft cover. Heavy cardstock printed stiff wrappers with title printed in black on cover; with black taped spine. Photographs [selected and edited] and text (in French) by Christian Boltanski. 64 pp., with 62 black and white reproductions. 8-3/8 x 5-1/2 inches. Out of print. Scarce. Fine. Christian Boltanski changed everything for a period of time in the 1970s and 1980s. That he continues to contribute meaningfully to the dialogue surrounding accumulation, archives, and loss is somewhat remarkable. His assembled collections, not quite typologies, demonstrate a humility and sensitivity to the suffering of, for instance, Jewish people devastated by the holocaust. He created shrines of remembrance, tacit souvenirs, where in their wake were only numbing statistics. Although Boltanski never really addresses the issue of anti-Semitism directly -- it is always oblique and general in interviews -- his work assumes a collective responsibility for some of history's greatest atrocities.

First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 57 pages. Published in 1994. Landmark collection of portrait-photographs on subject. One of the most beautiful art photography books of our time. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions, particularly the "Art Data" Reissued Edition. The latter, called "Animals", was reissued four years later, in 1998. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by Bettina Rheims and Gina Kehayoff Verlag: Oversize-volume format. Salmon cloth boards with photographic reproduction pasted in front and titles on cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by Bettina Rheims. Essay by Serge Bramly. List of Plates appended at the end. Printed in duotone on pristine-white, thick uncoated stock paper in Germany to the highest standards. In protective glassine DJ, as issued. Presents Bettina Rheims' "Animal". Some of the most remarkable portraits of animals ever taken in our time. Known primarily as a celebrity, lifestyle, and female-nude photographer with a distinctive style, Rheims spent twelve years (between 1982 and 1994) taking these Minimalist portraits. Almost all major photographers have taken pictures of animals because they present a unique challenge to anyone who considers himself or herself a portrait artist. One of Warhol's finest works is his series called "Vanishing Animals", where he deployed his masterly silkscreen technique to produce breathtakingly beautiful animal-paintings. Garry Winogrand's "The Animals" is regarded as one of the greatest photography books of the 20th century. But it is to Peter Hujar that Bettina Rheims' own imagery alludes and must be compared. Hujar identified with animals and regarded his animal-portraits as self-portraits: They portray him as being like any other creature, vulnerable and defenseless. Rheims portrays her wide-ranging bestiary as though they were her fellow beings, Rheims' Ark. What will transfix the viewer is the way she captures their eyes. Whether it's a bird, elephant, dog, sheep, or tiger, and in an extended sequence, chimpanzees and an orangutan, the animals stare back at us, fierce, unblinking, and inquisitive in their gaze. An absolute "must-have" title for Bettina Rheims collectors. This copy is very boldly and beautifully signed in black pen-marker on the title page by Bettina Rheims. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is a contemporary photography classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed copy thus. 56 duotone plates. One of the most brilliant photographers of our time. A fine collectible copy. (SEE ALSO PETER HUJAR TITLES IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 3929078198. Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 64 pages. Published in 1998. Artist Book. Collection of photographs of two pre-adolescent girls' personal effects. The first and only edition. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. An austerely elegant production by Christian Boltanski: Regular-sized volume format. Plain cardboard softcovers with black titles on the cover, as issued. The book is reversible, with "Ost" on one side, and "West" on the other. Art by Christian Boltanski. Text in German by Michael Glasmeier and Andreas Fischer. Printed on archival stock paper in Munich, Germany to the highest standards. The reproduction quality is exemplary in every respect. Without DJ, as issued. Presents Christian Boltanski's "Ost/West". A photographic inventory of two girls' possessions. They are from opposite sides of the Berlin Wall, that is, the East and West Germany of the 1970's. With the deceptive simplicity that characterizes all of his Artist Books, Boltanski shows us that despite the fact that they live under opposing ideological systems, one "Capitalist" (West), the other "Communist" (Ost), the girls own and care about pretty much the same things that a typical girl anywhere, not just in Germany, does. Children know better and are still impervious to ideology, the most inimical of preconceived ideas, that, then as now, define grown-ups. The only other Artist Book comparable to "Ost/West" in its beauty and power is "Le Club Mickey" (1990). Since his death on July 14, 2021, tributes to Christian Boltanski focussed exclusively on his site-specific installations, completely ignoring his two other incomparable achievements: First, the series of short films that he filmed, in each of which an "accident" takes place, and he dies. Boltanski stored the films in vintage biscuit tin cans, which he salvaged, accumulating endless rows of them, a "throwaway", quotidian artifact that he single-handedly elevated to an art object - therefore as something sacred - and now feverishly coveted as such by collectors. Second, Boltanski's large body of work in the Artist Book genre will remain unsurpassed, perhaps matched only by Ed Ruscha's, sort of, and in a totally different vein. Now that he is dead, the grief one feels for the vanished Life is somehow mitigated by the timeless beauty of the Art. An absolute "must-have" title for Christian Boltanski collectors. This copy is very prominently, neatly, and beautifully signed in black ink-pen on the title page of "Ost" by Christian Boltanski. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. This title is one of Boltanski's greatest Artist Books. As far as we know, this is the only such signed copy of the First Edition/First Printing available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed copy thus. Lavishly illustrated with black-and-white plates. One of the greatest artists of the 20th century and our time. A fine collectible copy.
