Published by George Allen & Unwin, London, second edition, 1965, 1965
Cloth, 8vo, 500 pp, plates. From the blurb: "This scholarly and entertaining work was first published in 1939; it is now reissued with revised statistical and other data to meet a continuing demand. It presents the results of original research into the economic aspects of the transition from the medieval manuscript to the modern printed book, the problems of supply of materials and labour created by the introduction of machinery, and the growth of the literary market. The social evolution of the printing crafts is portrayed from contemporary sources, centring first upon the Stationers' Company, and later upon the trade union. The book traces the development of the author-printer-publisher relationship, and its bearings on the question of copyright, and reviews, inter alia, the organization and price policy of bookselling from the days of legal maximum prices to the modern net book agreement." Very Good in slightly used dustwrapper.

2 vols, cloth, 8vo, xvi, 349 + xv, 350-686 numerous plates and ills. From the blurb : "This is the first attempt to give a full portrait of the mind of the 16th and 17th centuries. The 17th century is known, and rightly known, as 'the century of genius'. In it the foundations of modern science and philosophy were laid. The present volume does full justice to that great age, and also furnishes all necessary information concerning what came immediately before and after it. Detailed accounts are given of all that is important in the first two centuries of modern science and philosophy. Mathematics, Mechanics, Astronomy, Physics, Meteorology, Chemistry, Geology, Geography, Biology, Psychology, Economics, Statistics, Philosophy, and the progress of Technology are all adequately dealt with, and there are about 300 illustrations to elucidate the text. The author was well-known as a master of the art of lucid exposition, so that the general reader should have no serious difficulty in following profitably the story of the birth and rapid growth of the modern mind. The volume, moreover, is also sufficiently full and well documented to provide the student and the expert with a long-felt need. And enough biographical material is provided to give a human and historical touch to the extensive canvas." Very Good in slightly used dustwrappers.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien in 3 vols The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and The Return of the King, published in London by George Allen & Unwin, this is the Revised (Second) Edition. The Fellowship of the Ring & The Return of the King are Sixth Impressions, 1971, The Two Towers is an identical edition, but is the Fifth Impression, 1970. All three volumes are bound in original brick red cloth, with a red top edge, in the original dust jackets. The jacket for The Two Towers has been price-clipped by the publisher, with the publisher's revised price sticker attached. Each of the dust jackets is protected in a clear plastic sleeve. There is mild shelf-wear to the bottom edges, and the foredges of the books show mild soiling and foxong. There is a small amount of old tape residue to the front and rear pastedowns, and the front hinges are slightly strained, but still holding well. The former owner's name is written in ink to the front free end-paper of Fellowship, and in pencil to The Two Towers. The books are internally clean throughout, and the fold-out maps are intact and bright, but there is a 1" tear to the upper left corner of the Fellowship map, which does not impact the details of the map itself. These early Revised (Second) Edition printings by George Allen & Unwin are becoming harder to obtain in this condition.
