Todo comenzó en la marítima ciudad de Málaga, donde nació a finales del siglo xix, iniciando con precocidad una prolongada carrera artística de ocho décadas que asimismo finalizó junto al mar Mediterráneo en la costa azul francesa, con similar exuberancia creativa. Varias son las premisas que esta exposición plantea para defender la idea de que Picasso nunca dejó de interesarse por los orígenes y tradiciones de la pintura, del mismo modo que su condición migrante lo mantuvo emocionalmente afianzado a su país, sin despojarse de la lealtad a su filiación cultural: Málaga, Andalucía y España forman parte de su ser meridional, no solo artístico. Así, la influencia del Mediterráneo, la mirada mágica, el retrato en la historia, lo clásico, la representación de la vida y la muerte en el Barroco, las dolorosas, los arquetipos y los rituales son algunos de los argumentos que permiten una aproximación a temas que forman parte de la iconografía del artista malagueño como son la tauromaquia, el bodegón, la vanitas, la maternidad, los ritos o su filiación pictórica con los maestros barrocos españoles, permitiendo desvelar diversos aspectos su notable identificación y novedosa interpretación del legado artístico español. La llamada del sur también queda reflejada en los textos poéticos de Picasso, una escritura libre y espontánea en la que trabajó durante dos décadas a partir de 1935, con abundantes referencias a ese sur, y que también forman parte de la muestra mediante una cuidada selección que de una manera relevante dan fe de la identidad española de Pablo Picasso. Finalmente, destaca la oportunidad de poder escuchar la voz de Picasso en esta exposición, gracias a las grabaciones de dos entrevistas que un periodista español le realizó para Radio Paris en Vallauris con motivo de su 80 cumpleaños.

Su relación con su país natal, España, y con su país de adopción, Francia, sigue ocupando y atrayendo a muchos historiadores del arte. Sin embargo, la relación entre el arte picassiano y el arte alemán no ha sido todavía abordada en profundidad, por lo que esta exposición, comisariada por su director artístico y editor literiario, abre sin duda una importante puerta al plantear vínculos, filiaciones y divergencias entre el genial artista y un selecto grupo de artistas germanes considerados ya clásicos de la modernidad y que cambiaron radicalmente el rumbo de la historia del arte. Sin que pueda hablarse de una influencia del malagueño asumida explícitamente en Alemania, la exposición, muestra tanto el interés como la resistencia que el pintor produjo entre los artistas germanos modernos que no optaron por la abstracción. Esta paradoja se expresa en el modo en el que estos pintores tomaron posiciones y desarrollaron sus obras conscientes de los aportes innovadores del artista español, principalmente por el efecto del cubismo, aunque no por ello dejaran de buscar una manera de crear propia de su idiosincrasia cultural, resistiéndose al peligro de ser víctimas de la contundencia estética del malagueño.

Pablo Picasso aparece representado en un primer sueño del 22 de enero de 1962, en el que Fellini y su esposa Giuletta Masina visitan la casa de Picasso, se reúnen en su cocina donde comparten una confortable escena de amistad. En sus memorias, el director afirma que 'estábamos en una cocina, era claramente la cocina de su casa, una enorme cocina repleta de comida, de cuadros, de colores Hablamos toda la noche'. Cinco años más tarde, el 18 de enero de 1967, sueña de nuevo con Picasso y anota en su cuaderno: 'Toda la noche con Picasso, que me hablaba, me hablaba Éramos muy amigos, me mostraba un gran cariño, como un hermano mayor, un padre artístico, un colega que me coloca a su altura, alguien de la misma familia, de la misma casta'. Hay un nuevo sueño en 1968, que no dibuja pero sí redacta, en relación a una falsa noticia sobre la muerte de Picasso. Finalmente, en julio de 1980, Fellini describe su cuarta y última ensoñación, en la que asegura que éste vuelve a hablarle como un amigo y un maestro: 'Sueño con Picasso (un poco más desmejorado, consumido, pero todavía muy vital) que me habla sin parar'.
