Leben: Nach seiner Schulzeit in der Normandie studierte er von 1886 bis 1889 in Paris Rechtswissenschaft. Schon damals schrieb er Artikel für verschiedene Zeitungen und 1887 erschien seine erste Novelle. Nach seinem Abschluss arbeitete er einige Zeit als Jurist, bis sich seine Leidenschaft für das Schreiben durchsetzte. Er begann als Theaterkritiker und Kriminalberichterstatter für L'Écho de Paris" zu arbeiten und ein Aufsehen erregender Artikel verschaffte ihm die Zusammenarbeit mit der renommierten Zeitung Le Matin". Zwischen 1896 und 1906 bereiste er verschiedene Länder Europas, Afrikas und Asiens als Korrespondent, und seine sensationellen Reportagen machten ihn bald zu einer Berühmtheit. Er berichtete unter anderem über den russisch-japanischen Krieg und die Unruhen in Odessa und St. Petersburg und in Marokko. 1907 beschloss er, seine Reportertätigkeit an den Nagel zu hängen und sich nur noch dem Romanschreiben zu widmen. Allerdings begann der große Erfolg der Geschichte erst mit der Hollywood-Verfilmung von 1925 und dauert bis heute an, vor allem durch die Musical-Adaption von Andrew Lloyd Webber. Daneben hatte Leroux auch immer wieder Stücke für die Bühne geschrieben, aber erst, als seine Werke in Frankreich verfilmt wurden, begann er sich auch für die Filmindustrie zu interessieren. 1916 schrieb er sein erstes Drehbuch für einen Film, den sein Nachbar René Navarre, ein ehemaliger Fantômas-Darsteller, produzierte und mit dem er auch weiterhin zusammenarbeitete. Doyles Vater Charles Altamont Doyle, ein irischstämmiger Beamter aus aristokratischem Hause, ließ ihn Medizin in Edinburgh studieren. Das Gymnasium besuchte er in den Jesuiten-Kollegien in Stonyhurst (Schottland) sowie Stella Matutina in Feldkirch (Österreich).[1] Ab 1880 unternahm Doyle als Schiffsarzt einige Reisen zur Antarktis und nach Afrika. Von 1882 bis 1890 führte er eine Arztpraxis in Southsea bei Portsmouth, verfasste in seiner Freizeit aber auch schon erste literarische Werke. 1887, mit 28 Jahren, veröffentlichte er die erste Geschichte des Detektivs Sherlock Holmes und seines Freundes Dr. Watson: A Study in Scarlet (dt. Eine Studie in Scharlachrot). Die deduktive und kriminalanalytische Methode ist bezeichnend für die Figuren Doyles. Er, selber Arzt, dachte sich die Rolle des Dr. Watson zu. Sherlock Holmes stattete er mit Eigenschaften seines Lehrers an der Edinburgher Universität, Joseph Bell, aus. Die von Doyle in seinen Romanen beschriebenen Methoden der Kriminalistik, beispielsweise die Daktyloskopie, waren den Polizeimethoden ihrer Zeit voraus. Dies gilt insbesondere für die grundsätzlich wissenschaftlich orientierte Methodik bei der Verbrechensuntersuchung. 1890 ging Doyle nach London.
