She was subsequently abducted, married to an Englishman, converted to Christianity, and brought to England. Her role in the negotiations between the Jamestown English Colony and the Powhatan people was essential to that colony's survival, and was the first seed from which grew the tradition of English~Indian cooperation in the early colonial era so instrumental to England's success in the New World. Here her unique story is told. ./~ In the saga of early western exploration, a young Shoshoni Indian girl named Sacajawea is famed as a guide and interpreter for Lewis and Clark's 1804~1806 Expedition to the Far Northwest. Her fame rests upon her contributions to the expedition. In guiding them through the wilderness, in gathering wild foods, and, above all, in serving as an ambassador to Indian tribes along the way, she helped assure the success of the expedition. This book retraces Sacajawea's path across the Northwest, from the Mandan Indian villages in present~day South Dakota to the Pacific Ocean, and back. Sacajawea was accompanied on the journey by her ne're~do~well French~Canadian husband, Toussaint Charbonneau, and her infant son, Baptiste, who became a favorite of the members of the expedition, especially Captain William Clark. The author presents a colorful account of Sacajawea's journeys with Lewis and Clark and an objective evaluation of the controversial accounts of her later years./ ~Sarah Winnemucca was a self~educated Northern Paiute Indian who sparred with Indian agents, local politicians and the United States government to try to improve the living conditions and the education of her people. She enlisted many influential citizens in her cause, partly through her autobiography "Life Among the Paiutes: Their Wrongs And Claims",published in 1883, which was one of the first works of literature by an American Indian.

One reason may be that, for more than half a century, there has been no up~to~date single~volume work that chronicles the story of Arab civilization ~ until now. Albert Hourani, distinguished historian and interpreter, has written a masterwork~a panoramic view encompassing twelve centuries of Arab history and culture. He looks at all sides of this rich and venerable civilization: the beauty of the Alhambra and the great mosques, the importance attached to education, the achievements of Arab science~but also internal conflicts, wide~spread poverty, the role of women, and the contemporary Palestinian question. Hourani describes how the new religion of Islam created a far~flung Arab Muslim world that embraces lands reaching from the shores of the Atlantic to Iraq and the Indian Ocean. Each has its own geographical features and historical traditions, yet certain themes and experiences are common to all: the rise and spread of Islam, the growth of the Ottoman Empire, the expansion of European trade and empire, and in the last decades, the challenge of Islamic resurgence and integration into a new kind of world. He provides a clear and comprehensive interpretation of the paths of the Muslim religion, its divisions, its authority and traditions, its current contradictory powers to unite and to divide. Throughout, social institutions and culture are intertwined with politics and economics. The text is studded with famous names from the past~ Ibn Khaldun, al~Ghazali and Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Saladin and 'Abd al~Nasir (Nasser)~ as well as with those of the present~ Hafiz al~ Asad, Saddam Husayn and Mu'ammar Qadhafi, and the Nobel Prize winner Najib Mahfuz.

Near fine. Firm binding, clean inside copy. Age toning. First paperback edition. "This paperback edition is a reissue of the classic book on the American Arts and Crafts movement, one of the most significant and far-reaching movements in American art. It is also one of the least understood. It transformed not only how objects looked but how people looked at objects. It changed American attitudes toward design and the home, and compelled people to think about the relationship of art to everyday life. The results can be seen in such diverse styles as Gothic, Oriental, Aesthetic, Colonial Revival, Native American, Mission, and Art Nouveau. 'The Art that is Life' was initially published in conjunction with a 1987 exhibition originated by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the first to synthesize the decorative arts and architecture of this period in America. Works include such objects as furniture, glass, silver, ceramics, textiles, wallpaper, books, and architectural drawings. With eight essays by distinguished scholars and more than 300 illustrations, this book serves not only as a classic reference on American design reform but also as a celebration of the era that so unified the 'artful' with the 'useful.'" - Publisher. Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. Green card wrappers (title on upper cover simply, "A.I.D. 2015"). [125 copies printed]. Advance large-paper edition, hand-printed by Stan Lane, of an article from The Book Collector, Winter 2015, for presentation to A.I. Doyle and his friends on his 90th birthday, 24 October 2015. After leaving Cambridge, A.I. Doyle (Anthony Ian Doyle, 1925-2018) spent all his career at Durham University, where he was successively Assistant Librarian, 1950-9, Keeper of Rare Books, 1959-82, and Reader in Bibliography, 1972-85. A.S.G. Edwards pays tribute to Ian Doyle's lifetime of service and "unstinting generosity of knowledge and spirit". "The fruits of his knowledge," he writes, "so generously shared, are in part submerged in acknowledgements in prefaces to books, in footnotes to articles, and in annotations in library catalogues and files in the British Isles and elsewhere. They testify to the reach of his scholarship. More visibly it has been reflected in a diverse range of publications, a body of work that now runs to over 200 chapters, articles, notes, reviews and obituaries, and extends now over a span of more than 60 years. But for self-inflicted counsels of perfection there could have been more. I have already mentioned the still-impending catalogue of Durham s medieval manuscripts. His PhD has never been published in totality; nor have his Lyell lectures at Oxford (delivered in 1967); nor has the special series of lectures he gave on English medieval manuscripts at the University of London in 1966; nor has the long-promised second part of his study 'New Light on John Shirley', the fifteenth-century scribe, the first part of which appeared in 1961; nor has the projected collection of his papers. There used to be a phenomenon known as 'Pollard's pace' associated with the disinclination of the late Graham Pollard to bring his various projects to expeditious publication. Doyle does not suffer from quite the same affliction. It is probable that at least some of the projects listed above will be brought to be completion. A lesser person would have done so already." In 2014 he was the recipient of the Bibliographical Society's Gold Medal for enduring services to bibliography.
